04/09/08 Clemson School of Architecture wins NCARB prize for 2008 for its Graduate Program in Architecture + Health
The NCARB Prize to Architecture + Health recognizes the overall program for innovation in applied learning in the area of health care environments. Three projects were submitted as examples of how the program embodies a systemic and comprehensive integration of the academy and the profession:
- A proposal for a Green Health Clinic for the Joseph P. Sullivan Center resulted from the interdisciplinary collaboration of architecture and landscape architecture students and faculty with professionals and clients. It linked programming, health administration, and studio courses on a service learning project.
- A Patient Room Prototype project brought together architecture, industrial design, and fine arts students and faculty with a wide variety of professionals, sponsors, and industry constituencies on a multi-year design-build-research initiative.
- A studio/seminar project, "Building in the City - Building as City: LSUHSC and DVA Replacement Campuses for post Katrina New Orleans," connected students and faculty with professionals through linked seminar and studio courses.

11/29/07 Clemson School of Architecture Ranks among Top 10 Schools in the Nation
The Design Futures Council and the journal Design Intelligence have determined, through a poll of many of the nations leading firms and organizations that hire graduate, that the Graduate School of Architecture at Clemson University ranks among the ten best schools of architecture in the country. The rankings, which includes an interview with Clemson University President and Architect James F. Barker, can be found in the November issue of Architect Magazine. "Clemson's 50-year-old program is best seen through the lens of its "Fluid Campus," which unites facilities and curricula across four locations: Clemson; Charleston, S.C.; Barcelona; and Genoa. Students abroad are more than tourists: They live in and design for each locale", the article notes.
05/02/07 Professors Recognized in Next Generation Award
Professors Douglas Hecker and Martha Skinner’s superABSORBER project was selected as runner up by the 2007 Next Generation® Design Competition. The 2007 Next Generation® competition looks for “bright ideas that focuses on ENERGY, its uses, reduction, consumption, efficiencies, and alternatives.” The project is a proposal for a new kind of highway wall barrier system which in addition to mitigating light and noise pollution also absorbs airborne pollution. Organic and inorganic pollutants present in our cities’ air are broken down through a chemical reaction that occurs on the photocatalytic cement surface absorbing much of the 1.4 billion tons of airborne pollution generated by the United States’ interstates highways each year. The sponge like surface of the system creates a “destructive interference pattern” which dissolves sound and light while increasing the surface area for maximum pollution absorption. As an ever changing material, the superABSORBER is enlivened by the passing of the automobile while mitigating the negative by-products of the roadway.
The project was one of 15 awards announced Thursday night at the Herman Miller Showroom in San Francisco. The winners will be presented in the May issue of Metropolis Magazine and superABSORBER will be featured in an upcoming Metropolis Magazine issues later this year. The winning projects will be exhibited at various upcoming venues including the ICFF in May and the 2007 Greenbuild International Conference and Expo in November. In addition to this award superABSORBER was also recently selected as Transmaterial Product of the Week and will be published in Transmaterial 2 by Blaine Brownell which will be published by Princeton Architectural Press later this year.
The team that worked on the project includes Clemson alumnus Marc Leverant and students Mark Gettys and Janis Fowler.

03/03/07 Clemson Students Design/Build in New Orleans
The Digital Design Build New Orleans fourth-year architecture studio is pleased to announce the launch of its website. The studio will realize the first demonstration prototype of the Dry-In House in New Orleans over the course of this spring semester. The website will provide updates about the studio and its progress, as well as give information about the project itself, so please check back often to see the project as it continues to develop over the course of the semester.
This architecture studio involves five fourth-year architecture students: Trevor Jordan, Katy Seaman, Melissa Vandiver, Vincent Vumbaco, and Mandi Young. We have just returned from our first visit to New Orleans. While there we met with members of the Hollygrove community in New Orleans where the first demonstration prototype will be constructed. Plans for the rest of the semester include a trip back to New Orleans for later in the semester at which time the finished house will be erected.
The Dry-In House is a mass customized affordable housing solution for post-Katrina New Orleans, designed by Clemson professors Douglas Hecker and Martha Skinner. The house allows residents to move back onto their personal property with a permanent, customizable home for the same cost as the government issued FEMA trailer.

Clemson University Assistant Professors Doug Hecker and Martha Skinner have been selected for participation in the 2006 Venice Biennale in Venice, Italy. Their proposal entitled: Dry-In House: an Affordable Mass Customized House for the Reconstruction of New Orleans will be on display from September 10 - November 19, 2006 at the Italian Pavilion in an exhibition themed Cities: People, Society, Architecture directed by Richard Burdett. This week Hecker and Skinner travel to Venice, Italy to attend the opening events hosted by Architectural Record, The Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State, The Peggy Guggenheim Collection and the U.S. Consulate General of Milan at the Hotel Danieli and at the Palazzo Venier dei Leoni. The process uses an interactive website connected to CNC controlled fabrication. “The Venice Biennale has for over a century been one of the most prestigious cultural institutions in the world. Ever since its foundation in 1895, it has been in the avant-garde, promoting new artistic trends and organizing international events in the contemporary arts in accordance with a multi-disciplinary model which characterizes its unique nature.” For more information on the Dry-In House web site or the Venice Biennale website.
