Architecture at Clemson / Positions Available
Professorships Rank Open
The School of Architecture at Clemson University announces several available positions with duties beginning August 2008. Situated in the upstate region of South Carolina, mid-way between Atlanta, GA, and Charlotte, NC, the School is a prominent, professional design program and is an important part of Clemson realizing a top-20 public university status by 2010, a goal set by University President and architect James F. Barker, FAIA.
The School’s vision is to advance its national stature by promoting design and academic research. It prepares students for diverse roles in architecture through interdisciplinary collaboration. Students study on a fluid campus in a variety of diverse physical, political, and cultural settings. Faculty at four centers (Charleston, SC; Genoa, Italy; Barcelona, Spain; and Clemson, SC) offer distinct pedagogical initiatives and research possibilities.
Minimum requirements for the positions include a Master’s Degree with prior teaching and/or professional design experience. Architectural/engineering registration and a Ph.D. are preferred. Opportunities include participation in the emerging Clemson University Restoration Institute (CURI) as well as the Ph.D. program. Teaching may include courses prepared for web-based and distance learning. Candidates with a demonstrated dedication to architecture and teaching, as well as those who have experience across disciplines, are encouraged to apply.
Assistant, Associate or Full Professor of Architecture is a tenure-track, or tenured, position to teach architectural design studio and graduate courses in history and theory, integrating these courses into the School’s studio culture. The candidate should demonstrate the potential for focused and funded research in the architectural application of theory such as architectural criticism, history, material culture or STS. The research will include students through assistantships and by offering a graduate seminar on the topic. Other possible assets for the position include distance education, editorial skills and advanced visualization techniques.
Initial screening for positions will be based upon a curriculum vita; a letter of interest that specifies the position sought and outlines teaching, research/scholarship, and service objectives; three references (names and contact information only, no letters at this point); examples of relevant professional or scholarly work; and a proposal for possible startup funding to support research/scholarship activities. The document must be ten pages maximum and submitted in Adobe PDF format.
