Architecture at Clemson / Positions Available

Clemson University School of Architecture
College of Architecture, Arts & Humanities
SIX PROFESSORSHIPS (RANK OPEN)

The School of Architecture at Clemson University announces several new and replacement positions with duties beginning August 2009. The profes-sional program ranks among the best in the nation, and the University is in-vesting heavily in Architecture as part of realizing top-20 public university status by 2010, a goal set by University President and architect James F. Barker, FAIA.

To this end, the School seeks up to six highly qualified faculty members. Each will teach in the design studio and demonstrate a strong research track-record or, in the case of tenure-track appointments, strong research poten-tial. We are strengthening our current research and Ph.D. emphasis areas: Architecture + Health, Intelligent and Sustainable Architectural Materials and Systems, and Community Design/Build. Opportunities include participation in the emerging Clemson University Restoration Institute (CURI) based in Char-leston as well as collaborative research with Materials Science and Engineer-ing, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Public Health, Environmental Sci-ences, and Architecture’s allied arts. The School has a number of cross ap-pointments with these disciplines. Both graduate and undergraduate students study on a fluid campus at four centers – Charleston, SC; Genoa, Italy; Bar-celona, Spain; and Clemson, SC – each offering distinct pedagogical initia-tives and research possibilities. A major addition to and renovation of our flagship facility has been approved. Start-up funds and seed grants to sup-port research agendas are available to all positions in the $20 – 50K range. Your research may be the topic of a graduate seminar and will be supported by student assistantships.

Up to six tenure-track or tenured appointments at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor in Studio + History/Theory, + Technology, + Community Design, or + Practice

These positions are dedicated to architectural design studio PLUS any one of the four focus areas identified above. Minimum requirements for all positions include a Master’s Degree with prior teaching and/or professional expe-rience. Architectural registration and a Ph.D. are preferred. Candidates should demonstrate the potential for focused and funded research in at least one of the four focus areas, and should outline in their letter of interest how their focus interfaces with the School’s interest areas, such as public health, environmental and materials science, community design/build, material cul-ture and STS, digital design, fabrication, and embedded “smart” technolo-gies. Other possible assets for the positions include editorial skills and a ca-pacity for either distance education or advanced simulation techniques.

Initial screening for positions will be based upon:

  • A curriculum vitae;
  • A letter of interest (see requirements above);
  • Three references (names and contact information only, no letters);
  • A proposal for possible startup funding to support research activities which engage the School’s emphasis areas and the cultures of its four sites; and
  • Examples of relevant professional or scholarly work, ten pages maximum, submitted in Adobe PDF format at 250 dpi or less.

Email the above materials with the Subject, “Faculty Search Committee –[your name]” to Sandy Elgin at mauric@clemson.edu. Applications received by November 3, 2008 will be assured full consideration; the search will re-main open until the positions are filled.
