Dr. Joseph P. Mazer is an Assistant Professor and Associate Chair of the Department of Communication Studies at Clemson University. He is also the Director of the College of Architecture, Arts and Humanities' Social Media Listening Center. His scholarly interests are in instructional communication, new communication technologies/social media, interpersonal/family communication, and quantitative research methods. Dr. Mazer’s research has encompassed a range of topics including emotion in teaching and learning, teacher use of Facebook, teacher use of slang, student academic support, communication trait predictors of social media usage, and measurement and data analytic issues and trends in communication research. He is listed among the top 1% of prolific scholars in the discipline of Communication Studies spanning 2007-2011, according to a study published in the October 2012 issue of Communication Education, a national journal published by the National Communication Association. He has published in Communication Research, Communication Education, Communication Methods and Measures, New Media & Society, Health Communication, Communication Studies, Communication Research Reports, Communication Reports, Qualitative Research Reports in Communication, Communication Teacher, Southern Communication Journal, Communication Research Measures II: A Sourcebook, and The SAGE Handbook of Communication and Instruction. His research has been recognized through top paper and panel awards from the National Communication Association and Central States Communication Association. He joins William Seiler and Melissa Beall as a member of the authorship team for Communication: Making Connections, an introductory communication course textbook (in its 9th edition) published by Pearson.
Although research is an integral part of his professional identity, Dr. Mazer also places great priority on his role as an educator as research and teaching are deeply intertwined in his scholarly pursuits. Teaching first captured his academic passion and continues to serve as a central component in his research and everyday goals as a teacher-scholar. Dr. Mazer’s teaching interests are in new communication technologies/social media, communication theory, and quantitative research methods. Throughout his career, he has taught introduction to human communication, public speaking, small group communication, interpersonal communication, gender and communication, persuasion, communication theory, quantitative research methods, and effective communication for teachers and trainers at Clemson University, Ohio University, and Illinois State University. He has received international, regional, university-wide, and departmental recognition for outstanding teaching.
Dr. Mazer is an active member of the National Communication Association and Central States Communication Association where he has held several leadership roles. He is currently serving as Vice Chair-Elect of the Instructional Development Division of NCA. Dr. Mazer serves on editorial boards for several journals in the communication discipline and recently completed a term as Associate Editor of the Basic Communication Course Annual. He serves as an Associate Editor for Journal of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning.
Dr. Mazer received his Ph.D. in Communication Studies from Ohio University, a master’s degree in Communication from Illinois State University, and a bachelor’s degree in Mass Communication from Mansfield University.
