Keynote Speaker

Knox White

Mayor Knox H. White, City of Greenville

Knox White has served as Mayor of Greenville since December 1995.  As Mayor he has the goal of making the city of Greenville “the most beautiful and livable city in America.”  He has emphasized neighborhood revitalization, economic development, and transformational projects for downtown. 

Key strategic projects include:  removal of the Camperdown Bridge and creation of Falls Park, the restoration of the Poinsett Hotel and Court Street, new retail (Mast General Store), a downtown baseball stadium (Fluor Field), riverfront development and initiation of a bike and walking trail system (Swamp Rabbit Trail) throughout the City, public art initiatives along Main Street, record annexations, and a model infrastructure for Clemson ICAR. 

Neighborhood initiatives include enhanced beautification efforts, traffic calming, sidewalk construction, support for neighborhood associations, reinvestment in neighborhood parks, master plans for commercial corridors, and attractive new housing in the city’s special emphasis neighborhoods. 

Under the mayor’s leadership, the City maintains a “Triple A” (AAA) bond rating and enjoys a reputation for solving problems on an innovative and bipartisan basis. 

A native of Greenville, and a graduate of Christ Church Episcopal School, Greenville High School, Wake Forest University and the University of South Carolina Law School.  Knox White is a partner in the law firm of Haynsworth, Sinkler & Boyd, where he heads the firm’s immigration and customs practices.  He is married to Marsha P. White and they have two children.

Panel Discussion of Business Leaders

Elena Colombarini

Elena Colombarini, General Manager of Vetroresina LLC

Elena graduated from the University of Bologna with a degree in Business Administration and Economics in 1999. She then began work as a financial analyst for "Il Sole 24 Ore". At this daily financial newspaper, she was responsible for the assessment and analysis of the management and funding of a group of companies listed on the Milan stock exchange. These businesses belonged to diverse sectors including the manufacturing, electronics, tourism, nautical, and papermaking industries. She compiled financial reports of these businesses that were subsequently offered to banks and other financial institutions. She also wrote articles and commentary on behalf of the newspaper.

She later became the Overseas Sales Manager for Vetroresina SPA. When she took over this position in 2003, she also gained the responsibility of developing new strategies for widening the American market particularly regarding new applications for flat glass-fiber laminates. She maintains close relations with the new US plant, and she manages all relations with the American branch of the company. She also coordinates the activities of the research laboratory.

In 2005, she was promoted to General Manager of Vetroresina LLC. Vetroresina is a distributor of Italian-made products in the U.S. market. Thereafter, she also became responsible for variety of areas including book keeping, general accounting, and relations with the general contractor for building construction and equipment installation projects.

She has obviously made use of her skills in English, Italian, and French. She now lives in Greenville, SC, and maintains relations between Italy and the USA for Vetroresina.

Ben Haskew

F. Ben Haskew, CCE, Greater Greenville (South Carolina) Chamber of Commerce, President / CEO 

Ben Haskew began serving as President / CEO of the Greater Greenville (South Carolina) Chamber of Commerce in December 2003 – a membership organization serving 2,300 business and organization members.  The Greenville Chamber’s Vision states “We will Build One of the Premier Business Communities in the World”. 

Haskew is a 39-year veteran of chamber of commerce management, and has also served as the CEO of chambers in Cobb County (Marietta), Georgia; Spartanburg, South Carolina; and Suwannee County, Florida.  He held key staff positions at the Tallahassee, Florida and Chattanooga, Tennessee chambers, as well as the Florida Chamber of Commerce.  He is a graduate of the Institutes for Organization Management program, the Center for Creative Leadership and the Diversity Leadership Academy at Furman University.  He received the Certified Chamber Executive [CCE] distinction from the American Chamber of Commerce Executives [ACCE] in 1991 and was named South Carolina’s Chamber Executive of the Year in 1994. 

Haskew serves as Chair-elect of ACCE’s Certified Chamber Executive Commission and has served as a member of the CCE Commission for the past six years.  He is a Past President of the Carolinas Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives.  Additionally, Haskew’s active community role includes service on the Boards of Directors of the Blue Ridge Council – Boy Scouts of America, the Metropolitan Arts Council and the Commerce Club.  He is married with three grown children.

Andreas Abbing

Andreas Abbing,  Executive Vice President, AFCO  Associated Fuel Pump Systems Corporation

After completing his degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Applied Sciences Rhineland-Palatinate – Bingen, Andreas Abbing began working for Robert Bosch, GmbH in 1984. During his time with Bosch, Mr. Abbing has worked in Japan, Germany, China and the US.  In Japan, he was general manager of Bosch Automotive Systems – Higashi Matsuyama – JP Chassis Systems and general manager  of  Project manufacturing restructuring with Bosch Braking Systems  in Tokyo. From 2004-2010 he was vice president of Corporate Purchasing – Technical Support in Shanghai, China. A native speaker of German, he is also fluent in English and Japanese.  He has used his language capabilities throughout his career, and they have allowed him to do many interesting jobs, see many interesting places, and do many interesting things.

Britt Beemer

C. Britt Beemer, Chairman, America’s Research Group, Ltd. (ARG)

Britt Beemer holds a BA from Northwest Missouri University and has a MA from Indiana State University.  He worked for Congressman Bill Scherle (R-IA) from 1966-1974.  After his work with Congressman Scherle, he was a senior research analyst for the Heritage Foundation.  He then began to manage and conduct fourteen senatorial campaigns, which included exacting research and demanding strategic planning.

In 1979, Beemer founded America’s Research Group, a full-service consumer behavior research and strategic marketing firm.  Recognized nationally as a premier marketing strategist, Britt Beemer has gained wide acclaim for his work on how, when and why consumers select their products and services.  His client list represents America’s top retailers, leading brands and smaller entrepreneurial companies which need marketing direction and long term strategic planning.

He is the author of Predatory Marketing, a book on strategic marketing.  His second book, It Takes A Prophet To Make A Profit, is about emerging trends of the millennium.  The Customer Rules, his most recent book, details how customer focused businesses win.


Alumni Panel Discussion

The panel will give Clemson students the opportunity to hear from alumni who graduated recently in the L&IT program and are now working in an international company. The aim is to exchange views on understanding the transition from Clemson to the workplace. The alumni will share their experience about:

  1. their studies at Clemson (including internships and study abroad);
  2. looking for a job and selecting a company; and
  3. their current work and responsibilities.
Jaclyn Spangler

Jaclyn Spangler, Alumna, Chinese and International Trade

Jaclyn Spangler is a 2007 graduate of the L&IT Chinese program. During her time at Clemson, Jaclyn studied abroad twice in Dalian, China. After graduation she moved to Colorado for a year to spend some time working at a camp and retreat center. Shortly thereafter, she and her husband moved to Ha'erbin (Harbin) China to teach English as a second language. Upon moving back to the US in 2009, Jaclyn began work at Expeditors International in Atlanta and has been there for five years. During her time at Expeditors, Jaclyn has worked as an Import Customs Brokerage agent, an Account Manager for global accounts, and is currently the Ocean Export Manager in Atlanta. As a part of her role, she interacts daily with people from all over the world to assist in the movement of goods for companies doing global business. Jaclyn is a licensed US Customs Broker and has a certification in IATA/FIATA Air Cargo.

Melissa Moquin
Melissa Moquin, Alumna, Spanish and International Trade

Melissa graduated from L&IT Spanish program in 2012.  While at Clemson, she studied abroad for a semester in Cordoba, Argentina with the Clemson Cordoba Program.  After returning, she was an intern where she helped Spanish speaking children after school.  Upon graduating, she started working with Expeditors International in Atlanta as an air export agent where she helped international businesses export their goods all over the world.  After 1.5 years, she became a management trainee and was able to work in several Expeditors European offices during the summer.  She has also been able to assist different departments within the Atlanta branch.

Tara Boudreau

Tara Boudreau, Alumna, French and International Trade

I am a recent May 2014 graduate from the Language and International Trade program at Clemson with a French concentration. Throughout my college career, I embraced opportunities to get involved both at Clemson and abroad.  During the summer before my junior year, I lived with a host family while teaching English in Saint-Malo, France.  During my study abroad semester in Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium, I completed an internship with my university’s Administration of External Relations and Communications.  Upon graduation, I started working as a customs compliance analyst at Sandler and Travis Trade Advisory Services, a leading customs and international trade provider that services over 300 clients globally.  The L&IT program prepared me to interact and effectively communicate with a variety of international clients and coworkers while introducing me to many areas within international business.

Woodsby

Briana Woodsby, Alumna, French and International Trade

Brianna Woodsby is a 2005 graduate of the L&IT French program. During her time at Clemson, she studied abroad in Angers, France.  After graduation, Brianna moved to Atlanta, GA and began her career with Expeditors International in the Import/Customs Brokerage department.  In 2007, she relocated to Spartanburg, SC and has since been employed by AFL at their corporate headquarters in Duncan, SC.  AFL is a Fujikura company which manufactures and engineers a wide range of fiber optic products with locations worldwide.  In her current role at AFL, Brianna serves as the International Trade Manager responsible for the company’s import compliance and export control programs.  She is responsible for overseeing cost savings programs including duty drawback and free trade agreements, preparing and submitting export license applications, providing site education/training, M&A due diligence, managing other compliance personnel, as well as working with external legal counsel and consultants.   She has also led several projects related to the company wide implementation of trade compliance software.  Brianna attends a variety of seminars, workshops, and other events to stay current on import and export trade compliance regulations.  She is a licensed Customs Broker and is currently pursuing an MBA from Clemson University.   

Angela Patterson, Alumna, German and International Trade

Angela Patterson is a 2001 graduate of the German language program.  Angela lived in Berlin, Germany as a high school exchange student, and again in Jena during a summer internship at Carl Zeiss AG Planetarium division in cooperation with Clemson University.  After graduation she worked with DXL Enterprises in New Jersey and for ZF Lemforder in Duncan, SC prior to current employer Bosch Rexroth.  Rexroth is part of the Robert Bosch group.  Angela has worked at Bosch Rexroth since 2006.  Angela returned in March 2014 from a 3 ½ year foreign assignment at the company’s wind energy gearbox production plant in Witten, Germany.  During her time with Bosch Rexroth, Angela has worked in Purchasing and Supplier Development, and now works in the corporate Quality group, responsible for product safety and product reliability.   As part of her role, she interacts frequently with specialists in Germany, the Netherlands, and within the Americas.

Joseph Dickey

Joseph Dickey, Alumnus, Japanese and International Trade

A native of Wellford, SC, Joseph attended college at Clemson University where he earned a B.S. in Management with an International Management Concentration and a B.A. in Japanese and International Trade. While at Clemson, Joseph participated in the Clemson Language Immersion Program (C.L.I.P.) to further his Japanese language skills. In addition, Joseph interned at ABC Research and Design in Fukuoka, Japan where he worked in economic development. After graduating Clemson, Joseph earned his Juris Doctorate from the University of South Carolina School of Law where he served as associate student works editor for theSouth Carolina Journal of International Law and Business, and was president of the International Law Society and manager of the Black Law Students' Association's Moot Court Bar. During law school, Joseph was a member of the in-house legal department of SCANA Corporation where he gained substantial experience assisting attorneys in drafting legal documents, conducting legal research, and attending legal proceedings.

Grant Burns, Vice President and General Counsel

Grant Burns serves as vice president and general counsel at America Fujikura Ltd. (“AFL”). In this capacity, Grant oversees all legal matters, including corporate governance, intellectual property, litigation and securities compliance as well as government affairs. In addition, Grant is also involved in the strategic and legal activities of several other Fujikura group companies, including Fujikura Automotive America (FAA) and Fujikura America Incorporated (FAI).

Grant’s legal experience spans over two decades. Prior to AFL, Grant was most recently a Member at Nexsen Pruet, LLC, where he focused primarily on first chair litigation, compliance and labor and employment matters. Additionally, Grant mediated a wide variety of complex business disputes by court appointment.  He previously had been a Shareholder with Ogletree Deakins, where he tried numerous cases to juries in state and federal courts. Further, he advised clients on labor, employment and contractual issues.  During his career in private practice, he was recognized for excellence by publications such as The Best Lawyers in America, Super Lawyers, and Martindale-Hubbell (AV).

A member of the South Carolina Bar and the Virginia State Bar, Grant has been admitted to also practice in numerous federal district courts, appellate courts and the United States Supreme Court.  He is also a member of the Association of Corporate Counsel and the Defense Research Institute’s Corporate Counsel Committee.

Grant is a graduate of Clemson University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science with a Minor in Economics. He also holds a Juris Doctor from the Washington and Lee University School of Law. Grant has worked extensively with his alma mater, Clemson University, where he formerly served on the Clemson University Board of Visitors and as president of the university’s alumni association.

Grant is active in several civic and philanthropic organizations in the Upstate of South Carolina, including the Boys Home of the South. In 2013, Grant joined the board of directors of South Carolina Charities, Inc., the non-profit that manages the BMW Charity Pro-Am presented by SYNNEX Corporation.

Brianna Woodsby is a 2005 graduate of the L&IT French program. Michael Hunt graduated from Clemson in May 1994 and began his career with Evergreen America. Over the last 20 years, he has also worked for Sea Shipping Line, World Cargo Transport and Landstar. Michael currently works for Atlantic Trucking Company as a Regional Sales Representative. Our customers include include Ross Stores, Coach, Fuji Film, Harbor Freight Tools, Dupont, Pirelli Tires, Ascend Performance Materials, Honda Trading America, Bacardi, Falken Tire and many more. Solène Vilchien, Deputy Cultural Attaché for Educational and University Affairs

Solène Vilchien holds a double degree in languages and a master in French as a foreign language (FLE) from the Université Catholique de l’Ouest in Angers. She studied for one semester in Estonia and worked in England for a year. After her studies, she worked as Assistant to the Linguistic Attaché of the Embassy of France in the Philippines before joining the Alliance Française of Manila as a FLE instructor. Passionate about languages, teaching, and travel, she works at the General Consulate of France in Atlanta as Deputy Cultural Attaché in charge of educational and university affairs.

Chelsea graduated from L&IT French in 2012. During her time at Clemson she studied abroad at l’Universite de Lovain in Lovain la Neuve, Belgium. She was also an intern at Michelin during her last semester at Clemson. After graduation, she accepted a job in Atlanta with Expeditors International where she began working in the import Customs brokerage department.  Ken Smith, Senior Vice President, Business Development, is responsible for sales, marketing and strategic planning for Fluor’s Construction, Fabrication and Equipment groups.  He has more than 33 years of management, sales, engineering and construction experience, with 18 years of experience at Fluor. In his previous position as Senior Vice President of Fluor Government Group, he was responsible for sales, marketing, and strategic planning for services to the U.S. federal government and select foreign governments. He served as Fluor’s President of the Manufacturing & Life Sciences business, Vice President of Sales for the Operations & Maintenance business, and Vice President of Fluor’s Procter & Gamble business unit.

Ken graduated from Clemson University with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering.  He has completed the University of Michigan’s Executive MBA Program and the Thunderbird International Business School’s Executive International Program.

Timothy Welborn, HR Manager

Tim graduated from Clemson University in Clemson, SC with a Bachelor of Science degree in Administrative Management and attended Greenville Technical College in Mechanical Engineering. 

Tim began his career at Reliance Electric Company as a Customer Service Representative and later moved into the Human Resources field. Since that time Tim has held positions of increased responsibility with different international companies competing in a variety of industries including, consumer goods, High Carbon wire, packaging equipment manufacturing, and automotive. 

In December of 1998, he joined Hartness International where he became their first Human resources manager and eventually over his 15 year tenure moved into plant operations. In this role he was responsible for all aspects of manufacturing. He was also instrumental in a plant start-up located in Tianjin, China and manufacturing partnerships and Austria, Sweden and Slovakia. 

Tim currently holds the position of Human Resources manager at JTEKT, Automotive.

Tim is married and has two daughters, one that has recently graduated from Clemson University and the other currently attends Clemson University.

Janet Krupka

Janet Krupka has been a Michelin employee for 29 years.  She received her B.S. in Marketing/Management from St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia, PA, and then earned a Master’s degree in International Business (MIBS) at the University of South Carolina in May of 1985, in the French language track.  Janet has had held numerous HR roles during her career at Michelin, and spent ten years in truck tire Sales as well.  Currently, Janet is the Director of Recruiting for Michelin North America. 

In the community, Janet is a board member of The International Center of the Upstate, and chairs the Upstate International committee.  Janet and her husband, Tom, have three children, and live in Simpsonville.

Rick began his career with Nestle 34 years ago. Today, Nestle is the world’s largest Nutrition, Health & Wellness food company with its head office in Vevey, Switzerland and operates 449 factories in 83 different countries. In the US, Nestle operates more than 120 locations across 47 states and employees over 44,000 people while manufacturing many Nestle favorites such as Carnation, Nesquick, CRUNCH and Butterfinger, Coffee Mate, Hot Pockets, Tollhouse, Purina and Nestle Waters . Rick’s career has provided opportunities to work across multiple sites in the US in various roles in Quality Management and Technical & Production, as well as projects in Mexico, Canada and Switzerland. Rick currently supports the Manufacturing Factory and Distribution Center in Gaffney, SC as the Supply Chain Manager where Stouffers and Lean Cuisine meals are produced in their very large kitchen and then distributed across the country. Rick is looking forward to returning and being a part of the 2015 L & IT Conference.

John Ling

John Ling is a Chinese native and a naturalized US citizen. He received his MBA from Charleston Southern University in Charleston, South Carolina. After graduating, Mr. Ling worked as managing director for a U.S./China joint venture, Metallic Building Systems (Asia) Inc.  He worked with home appliances maker-Haier, to set up the first Chinese-owned green-field manufacturing operation in the US in 1999. He moved to Shanghai in 2005 to open South Carolina’s first office in China, with main responsibilities to recruit Chinese investment to South Carolina and assist South Carolina companies looking for export opportunities there. China-affiliated and owned companies invested almost $700 million and employ more than 3000 individuals in South Carolina. He has received numerous interviews by LA Times, Washington Post, BBC Worldwide and Wall Street Journal. Most recently, Fortune magazine had a cover-page story highlighting his work with different Chinese investment projects in South Carolina.

Mr. Ling also serves as past president of Council of American States in China.

Elena Colombarini

Elena Colombarini, General Manager

Elena graduated from the University of Bologna with a degree in Business Administration and Economics in 1999. She then began work as a financial analyst for "Il Sole 24 Ore". At this daily financial newspaper, she was responsible for the assessment and analysis of the management and funding of a group of companies listed on the Milan stock exchange. These businesses belonged to diverse sectors including the manufacturing, electronics, tourism, nautical, and papermaking industries. She compiled financial reports of these businesses that were subsequently offered to banks and other financial institutions. She also wrote articles and commentary on behalf of the newspaper.

She later became the Overseas Sales Manager for Vetroresina SPA. When she took over this position in 2003, she also gained the responsibility of developing new strategies for widening the American market particularly regarding new applications for flat glass-fiber laminates. She maintains close relations with the new US plant, and she manages all relations with the American branch of the company. She also coordinates the activities of the research laboratory.

In 2005, she was promoted to General Manager of Vetroresina LLC. Vetroresina is a distributor of Italian-made products in the U.S. market. Thereafter, she also became responsible for variety of areas including book keeping, general accounting, and relations with the general contractor for building construction and equipment installation projects. 

She has obviously made use of her skills in English, Italian, and French. She now lives in Greenville, SC, and maintains relations between Italy and the USA for Vetroresina.
