Matthew Peterson

I received my M.S. Mechanical Engineering from Clemson 2012. I have been with ZF Transmissions since August of 2014. I am one of currently three Problem Solving Engineers here at ZF. Our role as a group is to gain an intimate understanding of various problem solving tools, techniques, and methodologies. We are primarily focused on Lean/Six Sigma and Shainin Red X, but also learn other more common things like 8D, A3, 5 Whys etc. The purpose for this knowledge is two fold. First, as the support for our entire facility (~2500 employees) for advance problem solving, our organization looks to us to help coach/mentor engineers, supervisors, and managers as they work to solve problems related to their normal responsibilites. Second, if there is a problem that no one else has been able to solve or is very critical to our operation from a cost/quality/delivery standpoint, we are asked to apply our knowledge of advanced problem solving techniques and tools to quickly resolve the issue with the support of the same supervisors, managers and engineers who are familiar with the product or process in question. I have learned much already in this position about both the technical side of root cause investigation in a manufacturing setting, as well as time and project management (all of which I was not explicitly taught in my formal education).
