Minors in Modern Languages

American Sign Language Studies (15 credits minimum): A minor in American Sign Language Studies requires ASL 3010 and ASL 3020, plus nine credits of ASL courses at the 3000 or 4000 level. NOTE: This minor is not open to Modern Languages majors whose emphasis area is American Sign Language.

Chinese Studies (15 credits minimum): A minor in Chinese Studies requires 15 credits selected from 3000- and 4000-level CHIN courses, including CHIN 3050 and CHIN 3060 and at least one 4000-level literature course.

East Asian Studies (15 credits minimum): A minor in East Asian Studies requires 15 credits, at least six of which must be at the 4000 level, distributed as follows: three credits from Group I; six additional credits selected from either Group I or from Group II; and six credits from Group III:

Group I: CHIN 4180HIST 3340JAPN 4170 or POSC 3720
Group II: HIST 3300, HIST 3330, PHIL 3120, PHIL 3130, POSC 4770, REL 3140, or any other approved courses
Group III: EAS 1230, JAPN 4010, JAPN 4990, any Chinese or Japanese language course, or any other approved courses

Courses in Groups II and III must represent a combination of Chinese and Japanese courses.

Educational Interpreting Minor (15 credits minimum) The Educational Interpreting minor prepares students as entry-level interpreters to work with students who are Deaf in K-12 classrooms. Coursework focuses on interpreter processing skills, continued sign vocabulary development, the transfer of meaning between languages, as well as, a specialized focus on interpreting in the educational setting. The minor requires ASL 3150, ASL 3200, ASL 3250, ASL 4200, and ASL 4250.

French Studies (15 credits minimum): A minor in French Studies requires 15 credits of 3000- and 4000-level FR courses, including FR 3050 and at least one 4000-level literature course (select from FR 4000FR 4100FR 4120FR 4200, or FR 4990). FR 4380 and FR 4390 may not be used to satisfy requirements for the French Studies minor. NOTE: This minor is not open to Language and International Business majors or Language and International Health majors whose target language is French, or to Modern Languages majors whose emphasis area is French.

German Studies (18 credits minimum): A minor in German Studies requires GER 2010 and GER 2020 and 12 credits of 3000- and 4000-level GER courses. GER 3970GER 4760, and GER 4970 may not be used to satisfy requirements for the German Studies minor. NOTE: This minor is not open to Language and International Business majors whose target language is German or to Modern Languages majors whose emphasis area is German.

Italian Studies (15 credits minimum): A minor in Italian Studies requires 15 credits of 3000- and 4000-level ITAL courses, including at least one 4000-level literature course. NOTE: This minor is not open to Language and International Business majors whose target language is Italian or to Modern Languages majors whose emphasis area is Italian.

Japanese Studies (18 credits minimum):  A minor in Japanese Studies requires six credits of JAPN 2010 and JAPN 2020, and 12 credits of 3000- and 4000-level JAPN courses, of which at least six credits must be taught in Japanese. NOTE: This minor is not open to Language and International Business majors whose target language is Japanese or to Modern Languages majors whose emphasis area is Japanese.

Middle Eastern Studies (15 credits minimum) A minor in Middle Eastern Studies requires 15 credits as follows: three credits from Group I, three credits from Group II, and nine additional credits selected from any courses listed in Group I or II or another approved course. Middle Eastern Studies minors are encouraged to learn languages native to the region. On a case-by-case bases, students with intermediate level or higher proficiency in a Middle Eastern language may earn credit for their language skills. Group II - History and Politics: HIST 3510, HIST 3520, HIST 3960, HIST 3970, HIST 4720, HIST 4880, POSC 4760 

Russian Area Studies (15 credits minimum) A minor in Russian Area Studies requires 15 credits, three of which must be in Russian language courses at the 2000 level or above. The remaining 12 credits are distributed as follows:

Group I: Three credits selected from RUSS 3070, RUSS 3400, RUSS 3600, RUSS 3610, RUSS 3980 and RUSS 4600 
Group II: Three credits selected from HIST 3850, HIST 3860, HIST 3870 and HIST 4940 
Group III: Three credits of POSC 4710 
Group IV: Three additional credits selected from any of the courses listed above.

Spanish Studies (15 credits minimum): A minor in Spanish Studies requires 15 credits of 3000- and 4000-level SPAN courses, including at least one 4000-level literature course (select from SPAN 4010SPAN 4030SPAN 4040SPAN 4050SPAN 4060SPAN 4070SPAN 4220, and SPAN 4990). SPAN 4380 and SPAN 4390 may not be used to satisfy requirements for the Spanish Studies minor.  NOTE: This minor is not open to Language and International Business majors or Language and International Health majors whose target language is Spanish, or to Modern Languages majors whose emphasis area is Spanish.

Spanish-American Area Studies (18 credits minimum): A minor in Spanish-American Area Studies requires the equivalent of SPAN 2020; and ECON 4100 and 12 additional credits distributed as follows:

Six credits selected from GEOG 3400, HIST 3400, HIST 3410, HIST 3420 and HIST 4400 
Six credits selected from SPAN 3080, SPAN 3110, SPAN 3820, SPAN 4030, SPAN 4220 and SPAN 4350
