The Major

Do you dream of making a difference and changing the world around you for the better? Do you wonder how you can have an impact on your community or on the lives of people halfway around the globe?

Women are increasingly stepping up to leadership roles in fields as diverse as politics, education, business, health policy, medicine, the arts and the sciences. A major in women’s leadership will help you understand the challenges and opportunities women face, locally and globally, and give you the knowledge and skills you need to succeed wherever your interests lie.

The major is designed to work well as a stand alone major or as a second major. All students in the program will develop an individualized course of study tailored to their interests and career goals.

In addition to General Education requirements and 120 total hours, majors in Women’s Leadership must complete 33 hours of coursework in the major, as follows:

  • 3 hours in either WS 1030 Women in Global Perspective or WS 3010 Intro to Women’s Studies
  • 9 hours total in Leadership, including WS 2300 Women and Leadership (3 hrs) and two elective leadership courses (6 hrs) from an approved list
  • 3 hours in theories and methods (students choose from WS 3490, 4230, 4360, or 4590)
  • 12 hours in electives chosen from Group II and Group III courses
  • 3 hours in a program approved internship
  • 3 hours in a capstone senior seminar
