In 2003 Clemson University initiated a new Health Communication
Certificate Program that piggybacks onto the Master of Arts in Professional
Communication (MAPC) that currently exists within the English Department
at Clemson University. Because the health care profession is growing
at a rapid pace, the purpose of this Certificate Program is to train
current health professionals and MAPC graduate students with high-tech
skills and abilities to better communicate in the health profession.
Health professionals today need a thorough understanding of health
care audiences to be able to design state-of-the-art technical documents
and media productions.
The Health Communication Certificate Program is unique because
the certificate can be awarded not only to returning health professionals
who wish to retool themselves with better technical skills for the
workplace, but also to MAPC graduates who seek to work in the health
profession. Another unique aspect of this program is that it strongly
emphasizes communication rather than health. This program is used
to aid health professionals to better communicate their data and
information to patients and other professionals. Because of the
uniqueness of this program, students will be much more prepared
to meet the demands of hospital systems, HMOs, and health research
institutions that need researchers capable of both quality research
and state-of-the-art software usage.
The program gives flexibility to students as well as health professionals
because it is offered in two different tracks to meet the needs
of both groups. The HCC program consumes less time as well as money
for the quality and amount of training that it involves. Students
do not have to take expensive correspondence or training courses,
nor do they have to pay expensive lab fees. The program also features
a highly skilled and experienced faculty. After earning this certificate,
students will have a greater opportunity to advance in jobs, receive
promotions, and have better access to the job market.
