Café Cultura Volunteer Update
October 2010

Note: As our Thanksgiving’s (November 26th) and Christmas’ dinner (December 17th) are approaching, we encourage all those who would like to support these events through donations or volunteering to contact us at your earliest convenience.
Domingo Latino (Latino Sunday): Sunday, October 17, 2010 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM
Join us at the Golden Strip YMCA in Simpsonville, located on Hwy 14, for an evening of fun and fitness! The YMCA offers healthy physical activities, such as Zumba lessons, and opens the swimming pool and basketball courts for the families’ enjoyment. YMCA staff members are on hand to lead activities. The cost of participation is $2.00 per adult and $1.00 per child. You do not need to be a member of the YMCA to attend this activity.
Volunteer opportunities: Provide childcare for young children while mothers participate in Zumba class; Join our families at the Y to make new friends and have fun!
Cultural Friday: Friday, October 29th, 2010 from 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM
Come celebrate at Café Cultura’s monthly cultural gathering! For October’s Cultural Friday, we will be celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month with a great performance from the Greenville International Folkloric Ballet. We will celebrate with food, music, and activities. Families bring a dish to share. Come learn more about the cultural traditions of Latin America. We will meet at Building 2, CCS. Café Cultura would like to thanks the following volunteers who donated their time during August’s Cultural Friday: Pamela Huffstetlr and her volunteer’s team from Kolh’s, Ana Neves from Parents & Children, Erica Moreno, Luz Carlón, Carmen Alava, Carmen Herrera, Ivana Herrera, Dorothy Aranda, and Maria Tinti. In addition, we would like to thank El Faraón DJ services for bringing karaoke and music for the families’ enjoyment.
Volunteer opportunities: Donate artistic performances, food, or drinks; Help decorate, set up, serve food, plan and lead activities, help facilitate activities, and clean up once the activity is completed.
Club Mommy and Me: Mondays, 4:30 PM to 5:30 PM
Antonia Camacho, director of Club Mommy and Me, facilitates weekly parent-child activities at Café Cultura. Parents have the opportunity to learn fun and educational strategies to enhance their children’s development. Mothers and children also meet at local parks and amusement centers periodically to bond and build friendships.
Volunteer opportunities: Help with set-up and clean-up; Lead activities; Donate funds to purchase arts and crafts materials.
Parent-Child Readiness Workshops by Ready 4 Reading: Tuesdays, 4:30 PM to 5:30 PM
Ana Neves from Ready 4 Reading will be facilitating weekly workshops at Café Cultura. During these workshops, parents will have the opportunity to learn fun and educational strategies to promote their children’s school readiness.
Volunteer opportunities: Help with set-up and clean-up, to lead activities. Donate funds to purchase books and materials.
Tutoring and Enrichment Activities: Monday to Wednesday, 4:30 PM to 6:30 PM.
Café Cultura’s tutoring program provides one-on-one and small group assistance to elementary and middle school students. The individual attention students receive helps strengthen their fundamental math and reading skills while building their confidence. Structured enrichment activities will be provided for children 6 years and under, as well as for school-aged children.
Volunteer opportunities: Serve as a tutor one day a week (two hours); Help plan, lead, or facilitate enrichment activities for children. Donate arts and craft materials for the enrichment activities. Please note that Café Cultura will complete a criminal background check for all volunteers serving in the after-school program.
Educational Chats: Wednesdays, from 4:30 PM to 5:30 PM.
Café Cultura’s educational chats provide an opportunity for Hispanic parents to learn about topics of interest related to parenting, adult education, finances, legal issues, job skills, health, and well-being. These chats are conducted by representatives from partnering organizations in coordination with Café Cultura’s staff. On Wednesday, October 13th at 4:00 PM, we will host a cancer prevention awareness event with Evelyn Lugo from Best Chance Network. Other local preventive health programs’ coordinators will be present as well.
Café Cultura would like to thank the following facilitators for donating their time during September: Yvette Spees, ECPI Technical Institute/School of Nursing; Catalina Solis, American Red Cross; Lic. Maria Fernanda Hurtado, community volunteer; Ashley Lester, Social worker/community volunteer; and Genaro Marin, PhD, Latino Ministry/Russel Memorial Presbyterian Church.
Synergy Garden
The Synergy Garden, at the Center for Community Services, is a space of healthy and fun interaction for families. By volunteering just one hour a week, you can contribute and learn how to cultivate agricultural products, as well as benefit from the produce. In the meantime, you will be in a multicultural environment where you can bond with families of various origins. More information, please contact Anita Tam, coordinator at: atam@clemson.edu
Please consider donating the following items to help support Café Cultura’s efforts:
- Arts and crafts materials and a safety box to hold valuables
- Snacks and disposables for the children (cookies, chips, juice, foam cups and plates, etc.)
