Ger 305 German Conversation and Composition (3 credits)
Training in spoken and written German with emphasis on vocabulary acquisition, oral and written communication strategies, appropriate linguistic formulations for specific cultural contexts, and stylistics. Preq: GER 202 or consent of instructor.

Examines the Austrian, German, and Swiss Short Story as a distinct literary genre that flourished particularly after 1945. Provides ample conversation and composition practice, as well as introduction to principles of literary prose analysis. Preq.: Ger 202 or consent of instructor.
This is a reading-intensive transition course preparing students for all upper level German classes, can be taken in lieu of German 305.




Title: "Thomas Mann: Deceit and Irony of a Novelist"
Examines some of Mann's most characteristic works, including Death in Venice and The Magic Mountain. Particular focus on Mann's ironic and playful practice of the novel as well as on the crucial philosophical, historical and cultural contexts of that practice.
