Ed Arnold (top) came to Clemson in 1968 after teaching high school German in Columbia for 10 years. During the school year 1973-74, he took his family to Nabburg, Bavaria where he gained invaluable experience, language skills, and, most importantly, many friends. While at Clemson, I was most proud of our German Study Abroad trips, which began in 1980. Although the first two, 1980 and 1982, technically weren't "study" trips, with courses and credit, they provided valuable experience, especially with regard to the trips into the GDR. The first true study abroad trip was offered in the summer of 1984: six weeks, with classes and home stay with families in Nabburg, several trips into various areas of German-speaking countries, including 10 days in the German Democratic Republic. There would be a total of 12 such trips until his retirement following the one in 2000.

Ed Arnold's Summer 1998 group meets with Pfarrer Christian
in Leipzig Führer (St. Nicolai Church).

Professor Arnold was privileged to be the German language representative on the original L& IT team in the late 80's, and subsequently taught the business German courses and made contacts for numerous German language internships overseas.

He is thoroughly enjoying the freedom that retirement provides. Habitat for Humanity, reading, translations -- for the Technical University of Jena, a promotional brochure for the city of Berlin, and others, -- as well as two granddaughters, have a way of filling up "all that free time." Offered first Germany-Switzerland trip for non-students during 2 1/2 weeks in the summer of 2002. It was a resounding success, with 23 participants, and a waiting list of 12. Professor Arnold says that future trips are very likely.
