Helene M. Kastinger Riley is the Language Department's Alumni Distinguished Professor of German. Born in Vienna, Austria, and naturalized in 1965, she has a B.A. in Music from the University of North Texas (1970), and an M.A. and Ph.D. from Rice University in Germanics (1973, 1975).
Professor Riley taught German at Yale University (1975-1985) and Washington State University (1981) before coming to Clemson in 1985. At all three institutions she also held administrative positions. Professor Riley has a strong record in undergraduate teaching, and has taught innovative and specialty courses for upper level and graduate students. Her principal research areas are German Romanticism, Age of Goethe, Linguistics, and German History and Culture.
Diversity denotes Professor Riley's research. Author of more than a dozen books and over 65 scholarly articles, she has also produced a successful traveling exhibit, and educational videos and web sites. Her pictorial history of Clemson appeared in 2002 and is in its 3rd printing.
