Message from the new Chapter President (Fall 2010):

Liebe Kolleg/INNEN,

As a follow up to my E-mail earlier this summer, I would like to get the ball rolling with an event for AATG SC.  Based on feedback from several of you, I would like to suggest a workshop on the topic of FLES.  Since this is not my area of specialty, I call on those who are currently teaching FLES and/or have interest in the field, as I do, to suggest a place in the state you would like such an event to occur.  I have facilities at the College of Charleston at my disposal for a Friday/Saturday meeting, though I sense most of our current FLES programs and lobbying efforts are in the Columbia area. Would one of you be willing to get in touch with USC to see if we might use their facilities there?  I was thinking of the beginning of November for such an event, with February as an alternative.

Given public school budgets being cut, it is all the more imperative for us to continue to make a strong case for German, particularly in an area which is a center of German industry. As for our event in November (or February, depending on the feedback I receive from you),  I hope we can talk about not only practical ideas for the FLES classroom, but also about how to lobby for continuation of programs.  I also hope to invite a colleague of mine who does a lot of grant writing, as I feel this would be a worthy proposal for Title II funding.

Give me your ideas and I will do my best to get an event off the ground soon.

Thanks to all of you for your help

Sincerely,

Stephen Della Lana
