Nicole Cooper (pictured), Anaisa Figueroa, Shelby Jenkins, Maghan Knight, Nancy Parra, and Emily Winburn participated in Dr. Graciela Tissera’s service learning projects at Café Cultura to complete research on visual learning. Café Cultura is organized by Strong Communities and directed by Dr. Arelis Moore in Simpsonville, SC. The center provides support to Hispanic families with young children. It offers classes and meetings, directly and through other institutions, to guide Hispanic immigrants in strengthening their families and the community. The parents participate in courses on English as a second language, parenting skills, and aerobics. Children are offered academic enrichment, as well as a place to socialize and build relationships with other children. The purpose of educational activities and programs offered by Café Culture is to improve the lives of underserved Hispanic families, as well as their health and welfare.
Jessica Meehan and Thomas Cotton, L&IH majors, participated in Dr. Graciela Tissera's Creative Inquiry project (The Hispanic World through Film, Literature, and Media) and presented their research at the Southwest/Texas Popular Culture and American Culture Association Conference in Albuquerque, New Mexico (February 8-11, 2012). The SW/TX PCA/ACA is the premier regional conference promoting the study of popular and American culture. Since the 1970s, the Southwest/Texas PCA/ACA has sought to foster interdisciplinary study of popular and American literary, historical, visual, and other cultural and media texts. Offerings have grown over the years to include areas of international study.
Research Papers:
Jessica Meehan: "The Paradox of Motherhood: Cinematic and Cultural Perspectives." Jessica also chaired the session Perspectives on Civil Wars and Survival in Film.
Thomas Cotton: "In the Eyes of War: Salvador and Machuca"
The professional presentations at the Southwest/Texas Popular Culture Conference were made possible through competitive travel grants awarded by the Creative Inquiry Program.
