On Saturday, November 1, 2003, over 350 students from South Carolina, Georgia and North Carolina public and private high schools participated in the Department of Languages’ Declamation Contest in Daniel Hall at Clemson University. Students competed in foreign language poetry recitation in the following languages: Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Latin, Russian, and Spanish. Following the contest, the Awards Ceremony was held in Tillman Hall Auditorium, where students received 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place medals in a variety of categories. It was again a great success that students, teachers and parents enjoyed. Results of the contest can be found on our web site: <http://www.clemson.edu/caah/languages/dec/dec.html>.

Again this year the contest had the honor of welcoming Dr. Ralph Rynes, a graduate of Clemson's Department of Languages and a generous contributor to the contest. He attended the contest and handed out awards at the ceremony. Dr. Rynes is currently a Clinical Counselor and Director of the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program for the Lexington-Richland Alcohol and Drug Abuse Council at the Behavioral Health Center of the Midlands in Columbia. Dr. Rynes is also a member of the South Carolina Latino Health Care Coalition. We extend a special thank you to Dr. Rynes for his contributions to the contest.

The Declamation Committee also thanks the Vending Machine Committee for helping to sponsor this event and the following alumni and former faculty for their generous contributions: Mrs. Julius Holman Hines (alumnus), and Mrs. Noel Geoffroy (alumnus), and Dr. Rob Roy McGregor, Jr. (former faculty member of the Department of Languages).

Special thanks are also extended to them and to the many faculty, staff, students, and judges who volunteered their time to help make the contest a success.

The American Sign Language Club performed the National Anthem and Alma Mater at the Clemson/UNC football game. This has become an annual tradition for the club members. The weekend was also Parents' Weekend at Clemson and many of the students' parents shared in the event.
