Declamation 2001

Department of Languages Hosts 29th Annual Declamation Contest

On Saturday, November 10, 2001 over 400 students from South Carolina, Georgia and North Carolina public and private high schools participated in the Department of Languages’ Declamation Contest in Daniel Hall at Clemson University. Students competed in foreign language poetry recitation in the following languages: French, German, Japanese, Latin, Italian, and Spanish. Following the contest, awards ceremonies were held in Tillman Hall and Daniel Auditorium where students received 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place medals in a variety of categories. The Declamation Committee thanks the Vending Machine Committee for helping to sponsor this event, and the following alumni for their generous contributions: Mr. and Mrs. Julius Holman Hines, Mr. Ralph Rynes, Mrs. Noel Geoffroy, and Dr. Rob Roy McGregor, Jr.

Foreign Film Series

In the Fall, Bernadette Ginestet-Levine launched the first Foreign Movie Series at Clemson University. In the Spring Semester 2002 the Language Department had 12 foreign movies, including Farinelli (Italian), Un conte d' hiver (French), Amarcord (Italian), To Live (Chinese), Black rain (Japanese), Beyond silence (German), All about my mother (Spanish), Derzu Uzala (Russian/Japanese), Tin Drum (German), Before night falls (Cuban), and Bye Bye (French). The department will continue to show movies in the coming semester. The CU Foreign Movie Series takes place in the Lee Hall Auditorium (111) on Wednesdays at 7 PM and best of all: admission is free!
