• Take the five core courses: Professional Writing (ENGL 851), Rhetoric (ENGL 852), Visual Communication (ENGL 853), Research (ENGL 850), and either Workplace Communication (ENGL 856) or Organizational Communication (COMM 664).

• Pass a qualifying exam on the reading list (oral examination).
• Complete either the thesis option (six credit hours) or the project option (three credit hours).
• Present your thesis or project at the end-of-semester Showcase.

Your faculty advisor, assigned by the program director based on your interests, will help you select courses that meet your goals. Near the end of your first year, you will select three faculty to serve on your thesis or project committee. These faculty will guide you through the oral exam and thesis/project process. Most students take a foreign language reading exam in the summer between the first and second year. Preparation classes are available. For more information about academic requirements, consult the MAPC program handbook.
