You will take most of your courses during the first year of the program. You may choose to take courses during the summer, or you may choose to pursue an internship or work opportunity in the summer.
As an MAPC student, you will take five core courses: English 850 (Research Methods), English 851 (Professional Writing), English 852 (Rhetorical Theory), English 853 (Visual Communication), and English 856 (Workplace Communication). These courses provide a foundation of theory and practice in the field of professional communication.
The number of electives you take differs based on whether you choose to complete a thesis or a project for your end-of-degree work. If you choose to complete a thesis, you will take three elective courses plus six credits of English 891 (Master's Thesis Research). If you choose to complete a project, you will take four electives plus three credits of English 892 (Master's Project). Please see the Specializations section for advice on choosing these electives.
MAPC courses are offered in rotation so that you will have the opportunity to take most courses once during your degree program. It is important to recognize that each course may be offered only once during the semesters in which you are taking courses, so you should plan carefully, in consultation with your advisor. Consult the semester-by-semester course list for more information.
To see a sample of courses offered, please consult our Summer and Fall 2009 Course Descriptions and our Spring and Summer 2010 Course Descriptions. These listings describe both core and elective courses.
