Documentation and conservation of Magnolia Cemetery in Charleston, South Carolina
Magnolia Cemetery is located along the Cooper River close to downtown Charleston and has been used as a burial ground since the eighteenth century. Many of the monuments in the cemetery are in poor condition and have never been documented. Clemson University and the College of Charleston participated in the ICOMOS internship program to bring an international group of historic preservation students to Charleston to document the cemetery for the Historic American Buildings Survey. The project is being led by Prof. Ashley Robbins and includes creating a map of the historic resources and documenting individual monuments through photographs and measured drawings. This information will be used to assist in the preservation of the cemetery which will include advanced metal conservation techniques through Clemson's Restoration Institute.
