Washington, D.C.
Each spring, second-year students travel to Washington, D.C. to participate in National Preservation Lobby Day. While in D.C., the students participate in the Preservation Action conference, joining hundreds of preservation professionals in advocating for congressional support of preservation policies, program funding and preservation awareness. This trip offers a unique firsthand experience and illustrates the national scope of preservation efforts. The trip also offers students the opportunity to tour preservation offices and see preservation projects in Central Virginia. Last year, the trip included Monticello, the University of Virginia, Montpelier, Michie Tavern and Gunston Hall. Students also visited the National Trust, The Advisory Council on Historic Preservation, ICOMOS, the preservation projects in the Old Executive Office Building and the structural engineering office of Keast & Hood, preservation specialists. Top representatives at these locations led unrivaled tours, and special access was granted to the most interesting aspects of the sites.
