We live in an urbanizing world with challenges and opportunities to protect the environment and natural resources while accommodating the built environment to support an expanding population. As stated by the American Planning Association, the goal of city and regional planning is to further the welfare of people and their communities by creating convenient, equitable, healthful, efficient, and attractive environments for present and future generations. Planning is sustainable city building.

Planners work with a variety of stakeholders--local residents, business groups, developers, environmentalists, advocacy groups and politicians to implement a vision for the community's future. Planners work from the macro scale-international, national, state, regional and county levels, to the micro scale-communities, neighborhoods, districts, blocks, and parcel level. Effective planners are not just visionaries but action-oriented implementers of programs and policies affecting community development. Planners consider the physical, social, legal, natural, and economic aspects of communities in devising recommendations for the community's future.

We are glad you are considering the Master of City and Regional Planning Program at Clemson University that has existed for 40 years with alumni throughout the world. The nationally-accredited MCRP Program is in the School of Design and Building in the College of Architecture, Arts, and Humanities.

We are proud of our alumni and our program, which is oriented to educating graduate students for professional planning careers in the public, private, and non-profit sectors. The program offers many exciting opportunities for students including professional studios and internships working with communities as well as active applied research endeavors through the Community Research and Design Center, the Center for Real Estate Development, and other departmental and university initiatives.
