2008 is a major election year in the United States, and Shakespeare at Clemson marks the occasion by considering “Politics and the Citizen” in Shakespeare’s plays.
How does Shakespeare portray the dynamic between rulers and subjects? Do ordinary people have a political voice? How do sexuality, race, and religion influence politics? Is there such a thing as citizen politics in Shakespeare?
Join us for a dynamic event that speaks to politics today and engages us with literature and history of the past.
Highlights include:
- The Aquila Theatre Company performing Julius Caesar.
- The Albert Hamilton Holt Colloquium, featuring a panel of nationally known Shakespeare scholars speaking on “Politics and the Citizen in Shakespeare.”
- Film screenings of Joseph Mankiewicz’s celebrated 1953 film of Julius Caesar and Kenneth Branagh’s brand-new adaptation of As You Like It.
- Interactive workshops conducted by Aquila Theater Company for Clemson and area high-school students.
