Presidents’ MessageArchitects and students from all over the world visit Charleston to learn about its unique character, and twenty years ago we decided that it was essential for the only school of architecture in the state to have a program there. What started as a small undergraduate studio is now well on its’ way to a comprehensive 50-student center that includes graduate studies in collaboration with the College of Charleston, the American College of the Building Arts, and with very strong links to the profession. The Charleston program, along with other centers in Italy and Spain, contributes to the concept of a fluid campus and the globalization of programs the Clemson Architecture seeks, where every student has the opportunity for an enriching experience away from the main campus. As the Architecture program increases its presence and influence in the city it will help set standards of excellence in urban design as well as building design. The new building for the Clemson Architecture Center should be a model of sensitive contextual response, but at the same time it should set an example as architecture that can coexist while pointing to the future in important ways. The challenge for participants is greater than to produce an efficient building. The challenge is to respond to the School’s innovative pedagogy, make a special contribution to the city’s built environment, and open new approaches to architecture in a historic context. Clemson looks forward to the contribution of ideas from architects everywhere. This should be a meaningful and important moment for the University and for the city. James F.
