CULSOC Summer Science Camps 2016

Join us for hands-on, action-packed, thought-provoking science camps on the Clemson University campus!  All classes will be held in room G-26, Jordan Hall on the Clemson University campus.

Students in our residential camps will be housed in gender-segregated dorms, eat in the campus cafeteria, and be supervised by counselors through the Pre-Collegiate Programs Office of Clemson University. Outside of lab, students will participate in social events on the Clemson University campus, e.g. swimming, bowling, cookouts, etc. Airport transportation to and from the Greenville-Spartanburg Airport is available for an extra $100 fee each way.

CAMP REGISTRATION


Forensic Sciences (day camp for rising 5th-7th graders)

• Investigate a crime scene to determine what happened and how
• Learn how your senses detect clues—or fool you!
• Identify criminals and victims using DNA, fingerprints, blood, and other tools of forensic sciences

Session 1: June 8-10, 9:00 am to 12:15 pm
Session 2: July 18-20, 9:00 am to 12:15 pm
Early bird fee, $95. Fee after April 25, $130
Parents, grandparents, and guardians are welcome to enroll and participate with their child!


Food, Science, and Our Senses (day camp for rising 5th-7th graders)

• Discover amazing chemical properties of foods through fun experiments
• Investigate how our bodies sense and metabolize foods
• Learn weird fun facts about food and your body!

Session 1: July 6-8, 9:00 am to 12:15 pm
Early bird fee, $95. Fee after April 25, $130
Parents, grandparents, and guardians are welcome to enroll and participate with their child!


Cells, DNA, and Medicine (residential camp for rising 7th-9th graders)

• Explore the human genome
• Learn how cells cooperate to make a functioning, healthy body
• Trace diseases back to defective genes, messed up molecules, faulty organelles or opportunistic microbes
• Discuss the ethics of genetic tests and medicine

Session 1, Coed: June 12 at 3 pm through June 15, 3:30-6:00 pm (CANCELED 5/3/16)
Session 2, Girls-only Coed: June 29 at 8:00 am through July 2, 8:00-10:00 am.
Early bird fee, $425. Fee after April 25, $500
Limited slots will be open for commuters. Early bird fee, $250. Fee after April 25, $325. Lunch included. Labs run from 9:00 am to ~3:30 pm.


Biotechnology, Health, and Society (residential camp for rising 9th-12th graders)

• Analyze your DNA and correlate the results with how you taste certain foods
• Learn how DNA evidence is used to identify criminals and to exonerate the falsely accused
• Genetically modify bacteria to make them glow in the dark! Explore how genetically modified organisms are used to make pharmaceuticals and other products
• Probe DNA databases to identify normal and defective genes
• Explore the nervous system and discover how injury and disease can wreak havoc on our brains

Dates: July 10 at 3-4 pm through July 16, 8:00-10:00 am.
