The Department of Agricultural Sciences (AS) includes a wide range of on and off-campus facilities for use by its undergraduate and graduate students and researchers, including technologically advanced laboratory and computing centers, greenhouses, and many acres of experimental agriculture research areas.
Belle W. Baruch Institute of Coastal Ecology & Forest Science
Research and education programs focused on the ecology and management of the natural resources of the coastal region of South Carolina for the betterment of the state’s citizens. The Institute conducts research on more than 80,000 acres of coastal forest through public and private partnerships.The research provides information to help public policy decision-makers manage growth issues so the state's coastal environment can be preserved for future generations.
Cherry Farm Insectaries
The Cherry Farm complex includes two laboratory/office buildings that house faculty and graduate students, a self-contained urban entomology laboratory and insectary, rearing rooms, a butterfly house and an apiculture workshop. Adjacent to the building complex is a 30-acre field research area and an apiary. Faculty, staff and graduate students in apiculture, biodiversity of medically important arthropods, hemlock woolly adelgids, and urban entomology are housed and do their research at the Cherry Farm.
Clemson Experimental Forest
The Clemson Experimental Forest's 17,500 acres are dedicated to education, research and demonstration in order to better understand and manage forest resources for the benefit of society. The prime directive for the forest is to be a well-managed, self-sustaining, ecologically healthy, living laboratory, classroom and recreational resource for the benefit of the university, commerce and citizenry of South Carolina, with a mandate to protect and promote in perpetuity the forest as an irreplaceable educational, environmental, scientific and social asset.
The CUAC collection serves as a permanent repository for specimens used in university research. It serves as a reference collection for identifying economically and ecologically significant samples sent in from all over South Carolina. The specimens in the collection also provide a historical record of the changing biota of the southeastern region dating back nearly 100 years.
Coastal Research and Education Center
The Coastal Research and Education Center (Coastal REC) conducts applied research, education and public service programs on vegetables, strawberries, medicinal plants and specialty crops. The center includes 325 acres in addition to laboratories in the USDA's Vegetable Laboratory building. Research is focus on developing efficient and economical vegetable production practices and integrated pest management.
Edisto Research and Education Center
Clemson University's Edisto Research & Education Center (Edisto REC) is home to applied research and outreach on sustainable crop and livestock production systems to help solve problems facing the South Carolina farmer, particularly farmers in the Coastal Plain, by finding better ways to grow and harvest crops, raise beef cattle and conserve natural resources.
The Clemson University Greenhouse Complex supports basic and applied plant research housed in the Biosystems Research Complex. The Greenhouse Complex provides varied levels of controlled environment for plant growth and contains over 40,000 square feet of state-of-the-art greenhouse space and an approximately 16,000 square-foot headhouse.
Musser Fruit Research Farm
The Musser Fruit Research Farm is a 240-acre interdisciplinary research and demonstration facility dedicated to developing and disseminating knowledge for sustainable fruit production in the Southeast. Musser Farm is home to most of Clemson’s peach research with an excellent collection of commercial peach cultivars and related wild Prunus species. The farm includes nectarine, almond, apricot, plum, and cherry trees along with various interspecific hybrids
Pee Dee Research and Education Center
The Pee Dee Research & Education Center (Pee Dee REC) is a 2,300 acre tract of land situated in Florence and Darlington counties. The Center is home to top-quality turfgrass, row crop, biofuels, and integrated wildlife-agricultural research of particular importance to South Carolina residents. The Pee Dee REC fosters economic stability and development by conducting research and education programs focused on traditional and new plant-based systems appropriate to the Pee Dee region of South Carolina.
Sandhill Research & Education Center
The Sandhill Research and Education Center (Sandhill REC) was established in 1926 for agricultural research in the primarily rural Columbia area. Today, Sandhill is home to the Extension Agribusiness Center. The center’s faculty builds the collaborations needed to identify and address the state’s opportunities and challenges for the 21st century.
The South Carolina Botanical Garden is a diverse 295 acres of natural landscapes, display gardens, and miles of streams and nature trails. Together with distinguished education and outreach programs, a nationally recognized nature-based sculpture collection, and the Bob Campbell Geology Museum, the SCBG is a premier site for experiencing nature and culture and is home to an official American Hosta Society Display Garden, a 70-acre arboretum, miles of nature trails and streams, a butterfly garden, wildflower meadow and many specialty gardens. The Garden has over 300 varieties of camellias, as well as an extensive collection of hollies, hydrangeas, magnolias and native plants.
Student Organic Farm at Calhoun Fields
The Clemson Student Organic Farm (SOF) was established in 2001 and currently occupies approximately 15 acres of the Calhoun Field Laboratory on the Clemson University Campus, an area dedicated to teaching and public outreach programs in sustainable agriculture systems. The student farm was certified organic in 2005 and follows the National Organic Program rules which prohibit the application of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. A certified organic greenhouse is also used for production of transplants for the field and market. The SOF Project is interdisciplinary and involves faculty and students from a variety of colleges and departments.
