Faculty Awards:

Our faculty have recently received a number of prestigious awards:

  • Dr. Condrasky's Creative Inquiry team was the second place winner of the Danisco Knowledge Award, Summer 2009, for their Dark Delirium: Dark Chocolate Truffles with Super Fruits.
  • Dr. Aubrey D. Coffee, Lecturer, received the Research Chefs Association, President Award, Spring 2009, for service to the organization and promotion of RCA in academia
  • Dr. Katherine L. Cason, Professor, received the Anita Owen Award for Innovative Nutrition Education from the American Dietetic Association Foundation, 2009
  • Dr. Anthony L. Pometto III was a co-awardee for the AAEE Excellence in Environmental Engineering Award 2009 entitled Single cell bio-oil from an integrated fungal lignocellulosic biorefinery [van Leeuwen, J. (Hans), Samuel Beattie, Tae Hyun Kim, David Grewell, Lawrence Johnson, Earl Hammond, Anthony Pometto III, Diliara Iassonova, Prachand Shrestha and Micky Vincent]. April 2009

The following are our IFT Scholarship winners (Fall 2009):

  • Breanna Wingate - team leader, and CI team members Jacklyn Dejonckheere, Lisa Fuller, and Adam Rubelmann were second place winners of the Danisco Knowledge Award, Summer 2009, for their Dark Delirium: Dark Chocolate Truffles with Super Fruits, under the guidance of Dr. Condrasky.

Southern Association of Dairy Food Manufacturers: 

  • Jason Raines, Gary Rackley, and Anthony PomettoJason Raines received the Southern Association of Dairy Food Manufacturing Scholarship, $1,500 (August 2009).  It was presented by Gary Rackley from Coburg Dairy in Charleston, SC.   They award 3 scholarships each year for students in the field of dairy/food science.

  • Dr. Ronald D. Galyean, Professor Emeritus retired March 1, 2009.
  • Creative Inquiry continues to grow under the leadership of Dr. James Acton, Stender Professor Emeritus.  FSHN currently has 18 CI teams with over 171 students participating.  FSHN continues to be the showcase for CI teams at Clemson University.
  • Clemson University Institute of Food Technologists Student Association participated in the Southeast Region College Bowl Competition for the first time at the University of Florida, Gainesville, FL, March 28, 2009.
  • Dr. Aubrey D. Coffee has established an International Food and Sensory Course at the Brussels, Belgium campus.  Offered for the first time Summer 2009, the course was team-taught by Drs. Coffee and Vivian J. Haley-Zitlin..
  • FSHN is on iTunes U featuring more than 97 podcasts of Nutrition, Diet and Health, including 11 tracks in Spanish. Clemson on iTunes U provides access to digital audio, video, image and pdf files through a customized version of Apple iTunes. Podcasts are available for students, staff, faculty, and the general public. Dr. Cason serves as the Department iTunes U administrator. FSHN’s nutrition, diet and health podcasts were recently featured in an apple advertisement to promote iTune U.
  • In 2009, the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP), coordinated by Dr. Cason, celebrates its 40th anniversary. During the past 40 years, EFNEP has helped more than 600,000 children and youth, as well as more than 100,000 adults, gain knowledge and practical skills to make positive behavior changes in the areas of nutrition, food safety, food resource management and physical activity.  A recognition and awards celebration will be held October 15 and 16, 2009.
New workshops/outreach offered this year:
  • Dr. Angela M. Fraser was recently funded by USDA to develop protocols for improving food handling, hygiene, and sanitation in the child care environment in North Carolina and South Carolina.
  • Dr. Felix H. Barron continues to offer his Better Processing Control School each year in Greenville, SC. December 2009

Professional Service Highlights:

  • Dr. Beth Kunkel was appointed a member of the American Dietetic Association Research Committee for 2009-10 of the Board of Directors and House Delegates for a three year term (began July 2009)
  • Dr. Aubrey Coffee was appointed  a commissioner on the Research Chefs Association Certification Committee for a term of two years, 2009-2011
