- Leader, Virginia Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit. The Virginia Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit (the Unit) and the Department of Fisheries and Wildlife Sciences at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (the Department) seek a Unit Leader. The incumbent will be appointed to the Department at an academic ranking commensurate with experience.
Qualification/Eligibility Requirements
- Earned Ph.D. in Wildlife Science, Landscape Ecology, Conservation Biology, Applied Ecology, or related field (for specific degree/course work requirements, please read vacancy announcement ER-2010-0031 and ER-2010-0034 at www.usajobs.gov).
- Research record of utilizing tools such as remote sensing and geographic information systems to accomplish spatial analysis of issues such as climate change, energy production and urbanization as they impact biodiversity loss and wildlife management
- Record of publication of research results in peer-reviewed journals
- Record of grantsmanship supporting an independent research program
- This position is open to current or former Federal employees with competitive status or are eligible for consideration under a special appointment authority; *AND* veterans who are preference eligibles or who have been separated from the armed forces under honorable conditions after approximately 3 years or more of continuous active service.
Desired Qualifications
- Experience in the USGS Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit program
- Experience in Federal administration
- Experience in supervising administrative and technical staff
- Record of supervising graduate students to completion of research-oriented MS or PhD degrees
Expectations
- Effectively lead Unit, consisting of an assistant unit leader in fisheries (with anticipated addition of a second assistant unit leader), one administrative assistant, graduate students, and research assistants
- Effectively interface with Unit partners (USGS, the Department, the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries), the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and other stakeholders
- Develop and lead an independent program of research, including grantsmanship, mentoring of graduate students, publication of peer-reviewed articles in the scientific literature, and engagement with the university, profession, and society
- Teach graduate course(s) in area of expertise

- Eko Tracks, your representative in Cary, North Carolina offers several exciting study abroad programs in wildlife management and veterinary science, as well as conservation volunteer opportunities in southern Africa. These are specifically designed for students and other interest groups. The three week adventure-filled wildlife management program focuses on field techniques, sustainable resource utilization, ecosystem and biodiversity conservation, game reserve and resort management, and game capture operations. The special interest program is designed for students in veterinary science, vet tech or pre-vet with a focus on wildlife veterinary science, wildlife diseases and medicine, participation in capture and care of wild animals, breeding of rare species, wildlife rehabilitation, ecosystems and biodiversity conservation.
