CAFLS Tuition Policy on Grants
Effective 1 July 2009 the authority for assuring that all submitted grant proposals contain appropriate requests for tuition moved from the Graduate School (Dean Rafert) to the Dean's office in each college.
At a meeting of the CAFLS Department Chairs on 23 June it was decided that the general policies outlined below will be followed in our college.
1) If a funding agency allows tuition to be requested, it must be included by the PI(s) in the budget as it is being developed. See a and b below for specific modifications to this policy.
a. If a proposal includes a stipend that will be split among multiple sources that portion of the stipend included in the proposal must have a matching portion (%) of grant supported tuition included in the proposal budget if the funding agency allows tuition to be requested.
b. In situations where the RFP has a maximum total annual limit of $40,000 or less and a stipend is included, if the funding agency allows tuition to be requested at least 20% of the full tuition rate must be included.
2) If the funding agency's policy does not allow tuition to be included, documentation from the funding agency indicating that they do not allow tuition requests must be included with the proposal when materials are submitted to Grant Support Services for processing.
3) If a stipend will be provided using a combination of funding from multiple ‘small grants' from various sources, a request for a tuition waiver should be sent through the Department Chair to the Dean's office for approval. In this situation, faculty are encouraged to provide partial tuition coverage from the small grants accounts that they are using to cover tuition.
4) Requests for tuition waivers not covered above will be considered on a case by case basis.
Please note that beginning in FY'10, grant generated tuition will be returned to the colleges. The CAFLS policy on grant generated tuition returns can be found on the CAFLS web site under Faculty / Staff in the policy section.
