About the Program

This program is part of a continuing effort by Clemson University to provide services designed to update and increase the efficiency of professionals from public and private institutions and independent consultants in the fields of plant pathology and nematology. Accurate nematode identification is important in the management of turfgrass, field and fruit crops and vegetables.

The course provides beginning training in separation of nematodes from soil and plant material and identification of nematodes to genus. Seven Continuing Education Units and a certificate are given for successful completion of the course. There are approximately 20 hours of formally presented material and 30 hours of laboratory instruction. Each person is provided with dissecting and compound microscopes and fresh specimens of 26 common plant-parasitic nematode genera. Participants have the opportunity to study and learn to identify the nematodes at their own pace.
