Dr. Shipe was project leader (1980 to 2012) for the soybean breeding/genetics program to improve soybean yields in South Carolina and the southeastern U.S.A. Primary emphasis was given to development of cultivars and/or germplasm having improved pest resistance, seed composition, seed yield, and adaptation to southeastern Coastal Plain soil conditions. Specific interests included study of nematode-plant interactions involved in soybean resistance to root-knot nematode (Meloidogyne spp.), reniform nematode (Rotylenchulus reniformis) and soybean cyst nematode (Heterodera glycines). Now retired, he maintains an interest in ongoing plant breeding programs at Clemson University.
