Safe Zone

The mission of the Safe Zone Program is to make Clemson University a more welcoming and inclusive place for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) students, staff, and faculty. To that end, the program offers workshops to increase awareness and understanding of LGBT issues and to train allies to stand with, and advocate for, LGBT people.

Clemson's Safe Zone Program was created in 2003 in response to requests from students and staff who saw the need to create at Clemson a more welcoming environment for LGBT people. They pointed to the Safe Zone programs at colleges and universities across the country. A task force of students, staff, faculty and administrators was formed to develop a model for the Clemson community.

The Clemson University Safe Zone Team consists of faculty, staff, and students who have completed a Train-the-Trainer program and who volunteer their time to lead workshops. To join the team, you must complete both workshops, submit a Safe Zone Application Form (pdf), and participate in a Train-the-Trainer workshop.
