EMpower Clemson

Tigers Off Campus Student Council

WHO WE ARE:

The Tigers Off Campus Council is composed primarily of sophomores and juniors, as well as a few graduate students, who live at different apartment complexes off-campus and are involved in the Clemson community. This council works closely as a partner program to EMpower Clemson, and its main focus is distributing Did You Know and Think Ahead information, encouraging off-campus property managers to host alcohol-free events of their own accord, identifying and solving safety issues that have become prevalent in individual properties, and organizing other events.  The council provides a chance for involvement on Clemson’s campus and within the community with very minimal time commitment.

WHY CREATE A COUNCIL OF STUDENTS WHO LIVE OFF CAMPUS?:

  • Core Data showed that alcohol-related behaviors that Clemson tracks (memory loss, missed a class, performed poorly on a test, DUI, and in trouble with authorities) are higher off campus than on, with the widest gap being drinking and driving.  With this council, we hope to reduce DUI rates of off-campus students by partnering with Think Ahead projects and providing students with information on getting home safely to their apartments.
  • Anecdotally, students in the EMpower Clemson office believe that students seem to respond better to their peers.  By creating a council of students, it gives the council the opportunity for leadership and bringing the voice of students living off campus and making the concerns with alcohol off campus known.
  • By creating diversity in the council of different complexes, we can reach more complexes with late night events and information, which the students and staff in the EMpower Clemson office believe would provide unity among complexes.

WANT TO GET INVOLVED?:

The Tigers Off Campus council meets every other Tuesday at 5:25 on the first floor of the Hendrix Student Center behind the main stairwell.  If you're interested in becoming a member, please contact our Tigers Off Campus intern, Jay Young, at jmy@clemson.edu.
