Project History
University Housing and Fraternity and Sorority Life began discussing concepts for the Fraternity Sorority Village in Fall 2009. Here are some steps that we have taken to share information with and gain input from the Fraternity and Sorority Community:
- A Clemson Housing Master Plan conducted in 2008 identified a desire by fraternity and sorority members to develop free-standing houses on campus beyond the current housing provided for fraternity and sorority organizations.
- An introduction to this concept was provided to Chapter Presidents in Fall 2009 and revisited with new Presidents in January 2010.
- Three subcommittees formed during Spring 2010 to evaluate the following concepts: pros/cons of the Fraternity and Sorority Village concept, Village Design, and Village Policies. Recommendations were made by chapter members and advisors.
- Site visits were conducted at Auburn University, Emory University, The University of Georgia, and the University of West Georgia during Summer 2010.
- Information about the proposed Village and conceptual plans were shared with national organization and headquarters staff and leadership during the Annual AFA Meeting in December 2010.
- An upper-level architecture class engaged in design projects regarding models and conceptual drawings during Fall 2010 to further envision the Village.
- The Fraternity Sorority Village Planning Team was developed and began meeting in Spring 2011. This group provides ongoing direction for this conceptual plan. The Planning Team held informational meetings in October 2011 regarding two conceptual site plans and possible conceptual designs for houses.
- Updated Village plans and conceptual designs were shared with national organization and headquarters staff and leadership during the Annual AFA Meeting in December 2011.
- The Boudreaux Group utilized feedback from the Fraternity Sorority Community to update conceptual house designs. Feedback included evaluating some of the following elements: commercial kitchens, changes to bathrooms, multi-functional and expanded size of the first floor common space, number of beds per house, exterior facade, etc. Presentations were shared with the Fraternity Sorority Community in September 2012.
- A site visit was conducted at William & Mary in October 2012.
