GC 101 introduces you to the curriculum and the industry, including its processes, products, and careers. It emphasizes the attributes most desirable for successful entry and advancement in a variety of career paths.
GC 1020 Computer Art and CAD Foundations
GC 102 provides a solid foundation in drawing, imaging and layout software; packaging structure and 3-D CAD. It introduces design principles and problem solving skills relative to the industry. Topics also visited include typography, color, printing methods and materials, and end use of products. Coreq: GC 1021 Lab
GC 1030 Graphic Communications I for Packaging Science
GC 103 emphasizes the interrelationships of packaging and graphic arts. Students will explore the theory and practice of packaging relative to basic graphics arts, the manipulation of layouts and design, and the printing processes of offset lithography, screen printing, and flexography. Coreq: GC 1031 Lab
GC 1040 Graphic Communications I
GC 104 extends the introduction of basic graphic arts concepts, principles, and practices, such as printing processes and design techniques. Within the lab, students will apply their knowledge to create screen printed t-shirts, labels printed by the flexographic method, stationary or business cards printed by the lithographic method, and a Variable Data mailing project. This course may be taken as an Honors section. Coreq: GC 1041 Lab
GC 1990, 2990, 3990, 4990 Creative Inquiry in Graphic Communications
GC 199, 299, 399, 499 is a class Creative Inquiry class that is designed to give the students an opportunity to get involved in research projects or special in-depth classes related to the graphic communications industry. There are several sections that deal with various topics as it relates to different segments of the industry. The class is typically a 1 credit class and students can take it several times over the four years to build a research portfolio. Each CI course is set up with different entry requirements, ultimately it is at the consent of the instructor. Currently there are two CI sections set up and running in the department, one that focuses on variable data in print and on-line, a TAGA group that creates the journal for publication each year.
GC 2070 Graphic Communications II
GC 207 continues the thoughts and theories introduced in GC 104, while taking students to the intermediate level of graphic communications. Lectures, projects and assignments will broaden skills and technical knowledge in areas of layout, presswork, and finishing. Major assignments include a four color separation screen printing project, a two color lithography project, an introduction to Wordpress assignment, dye sublimation project, additive and subtractive color assignment, and several other technology oriented assignments. The opportunity is available to take an Honors section. You must have taken GC 101, 102, and 104. Coreq: GC 2071 Lab
GC 3400 Digital Imaging and eMedia
The GC 340 course is centered around photography, video and web design. Coursework includes commercial photography, studio lighting, photojournalism, personalized cross-media campaigns, responsive web design, social media, marketing, and online video. Students must have taken GC 102 and 104. Coreq: GC 3401 Lab
GC 3500 Graphic Communications Internship I
GC 350 is the course credit for your first full-time supervised employment in an industrial in-plant setting. This will provide valuable experience with materials and processes, production people, and organizations. Preq: GC 1040 and Graphic Communications major and consent of instructor.
GC 4060, 6060 Package and Specialty Printing
GC 406/606 is an in depth study of the problems and processes for printing in the package, label, and specialty printing industries. Coursework will include flexographic preparation, printing, die making, die cutting, container printing, pad printing and bar code production. Intensive discussion of new developments and trends will occur during lectures. Lab will include of a major “brand” project, in which the student will design and print their brand items on labels, folding carton, shrink wrap, and corrugated material. An Honors section is available. Student must have taken GC 340. Coreq: GC 4061, 6061 Lab
GC 4400, 6400 Commercial Printing
GC 440/640 advances skills learned in previous courses and applies the knowledge to large format presses. Students work from the design conception stage through all aspects of preparation, production, and finishing. Students will create most of their projects on Adobe InDesign and work intensively with layout design and image effects. The main project is an 8-pg. booklet with the topic being of the student’s choice. After the design and workflow steps are complete, the students will visit Heidelberg where their booklets will be professionally printed. In addition, students will create a versioned booklet that caters to different genres of people.The Honors section is offered for this course. The student must have taken GC 340. GC 4440, 6440 Current Developments and Trends in Graphic Communications
GC 444/644 is an advanced course for Graphic Communications majors that emphasizes theory and technical developments in the industry. Students will choose a research topic, create a proposal, and complete an experiment testing their hypothesis. Students will also create a Cross Media Campaign as well as complete research on other upcoming graphics topics. The honors section is offered for this class. Student must have completed GC 4060/6060 and GC 4440/6400. Coreq: GC 4441, 6441.
GC 4460, 6460 Inks and Substrates
GC 446/646 provides an in-depth study of the properties of inks and substrates used in graphic communications manufacturing. It examines the interrelationship between inks, substrates, and the printing processes to produce graphic content, with emphasis on the theory and technical developments that affect process control and color reproduction. The lab and lecture assignments are designed to provide students with a solid foundation in the manufacturing processes for inks and substrates, the assessment of their physical and optical properties, the assessment of print metrics for process control, and color management practices in the graphic communications industries. An Honors section is offered for this course. Students must have taken GC 207. Coreq: 4461,6461
GC 4500 Graphic Communications Internship II
GC 450 is the course credit for your second full-time supervised employment in an industrial in-plant setting. This will provide valuable experience with materials and processes, production people, and organizations. Preq: GC 3400 and either GC 4060 or GC 4400.
GC 4510 Special Problems Graphic Communications
GC 451 is a lab class designed allow a student to develop a higher skill level in an specific area of interest. It can be taken as a 1 credit class or up to a total of 6 credits (students can sign up for GC 451 more than once, but the maximum is 6 credits total). The class is a lab class with the expectations of 3 hours of lab each week for every credit you are taking (ex. a 3 credit 451 would be 9 hours of activity a week or approximately 135 a semester). Typically students either find a faculty member they work well with and inquire as to their research projects or find a research topic and match the topic with the appropriate faculty member. Each student meets with the faculty member and creates a personalized contact. Typically students have a year of classes before starting a Special Problems, but ultimately it is in partnership with a faculty member and it is at the consent of the instructor. GC 4510 An Introduction to Web Design and Development
Get a solid foundation in the principles of web design and learn how to build your own websites from the ground up. Also, get a basic look into how the web works. Learn a powerful new skill set that will stay with you into the future. This class is designed to build knowledge of web design and development to an intermediate level by covering topics such as HTML, CSS, jQuery, designing for the web, WordPress development, and trends in web development. Students will learn the fundamental languages and markups for front-end web design and be introduced conceptually to some of the more complex web topics including PHP and server technology. By the end of this course, students will be able to design, program, and publish a useful WordPress theme. Prereq: 3400
GC 4510 Functional Materials & Printed Electronics
This course explores the design, components, processes, and materials involved in functional materials and printed electronics. The course examines the technological and industrial applications of printing and graphics. Through testing and design labs, functional technologies will be designed and constructed. Student involvement in larger research projects within graphic communications and allied departments is required.
GC 4510 Packaging of “Concepts”
This course explores the use of packaging materials and Graphic Communications techniques to "package" Ideas and concepts. The course explores the rhetorical aspect of structure and design. Through seminar discussion and laboratory experience, students will come to understand how to package and present ideas and concepts through structure and imagery.
GC 4550 Advanced Graphic Communications Internship III
This is another opportunity to receive full-time employment in an industry directly or indirectly related to printing. Work site and job must be approved in advance. Preq: GC 3500 and consent.
GC 4900, 6900 Graphic Communications Selected Topics
This course includes subjects not covered in other graphic communications courses; organized according to industry trends and student needs. May be repeated for a maximum of 18 credits, but only if different topics are covered. Preq: Consent of instructor.
