The Basics We offer a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science in Sociology, a Master of Science in Applied Sociology as well as a minor in sociology and a minor in anthropology. We typically have about 250 students who are pursuing a degree in one of four concentration areas:
We also have 300 students seeking sociology and anthropology minors from all five colleges within the university. Because of the high quality of our faculty and instruction, we teach about 4,000 students per academic year.
Students may elect to pursue either a Bachelor of Arts degree (which requires foreign language proficiency and advanced humanities) or a Bachelor of Science degree (with special requirements in the areas of math and science). The specific courses that comprise these eight curricula (two degrees; four concentrations) are summarized in the department’s curriculum tracking forms that are included on this website. All students majoring in sociology are required to have a minor. Available minors are listed in each edition of “Undergraduate Announcements,” which is available both in hardcopy and on-line.
The M.S. degree in applied sociology at Clemson University emphasizes practical and theoretical knowledge in the areas of policy analysis, evaluation research and human systems. Foci of the program include the acquisition of social science research skills, theory application and practical field experience. The program prepares students to conduct theoretically sound, empirically sophisticated research projects and evaluation studies of organizational programs and policies.
Graduates from our department pursue careers in a variety of different areas. Many also go on to professional and graduate school in a variety of areas including law, seminary and divinity school; a number of counseling programs; and careers in sociology, anthropology, social work and criminal justice. We survey our former students one to three years after graduation. Generally, they report feeling very well prepared for both entry-level career positions and graduate and professional studies.
