Matthew S. Lewis is an associate professor in the John E. Walker Department of Economics who specializes in the areas of industrial organization, energy economics, and healthcare economics. His research concentrates on issues related to firm pricing decisions, price dynamics, consumer search, and consumers’ response to price fluctuations. Much of his research investigates these issues within the context of the retail gasoline market. Recently published studies include investigations of why retail gasoline prices rise faster than they fall, how consumers’ search intensity is influenced by price fluctuations, and how the presence of Edgeworth price cycles in retail gasoline markets influences the speed of price pass-through. Current research includes projects examining the sensitivity of gasoline purchases to price fluctuations and a study of how hospital systems and managed care organizations negotiate reimbursement rates for medical services. Prof. Lewis joined the Clemson faculty in 2013 and also serves as an associate editor for the International Journal of Industrial Organization. He was previously an assistant professor at the Ohio State University.
