HEHD Awards of Excellence 2014

The College of Health, Education and Human Development is pleased to present four Awards of Excellence this year to recognize outstanding faculty and staff members who consistently excel in their positions and demonstrate exemplary contributions to students, the College, and its mission. The four awards reflect the varied dimensions of the faculty and staff roles and the potential to excel in teaching; research, scholarship, and creative accomplishment; advising and mentoring; and service and outreach. Awardees will receive a framed certificate, $250 in faculty development funds and each of the awardees names will be placed on a permanent plaque in the first floor lobby of Edwards Hall.

Award of Excellence in Research - Leslie Gonzales

Leslie GonzalesLeslie is an assistant professor in Leadership, Counselor Education, Human and Organizational Development in the Eugene T. Moore School of Education. Nominees for the Award of Excellence in Research are faculty members who demonstrate excellence in asking questions of importance, systematically obtain answers to the questions, and share the results of this process in appropriate public forums. Here are some quotes supporting this year’s award winner:

  • "She has published in a number of 'high impact' higher education journals between 2011 and 2014 which includes 14 peer-reviewed journal articles in a short time span."
  • "She has an unparalleled degree of commitment to helping graduate students collaborate on various research projects which have led to their being involved in multiple published peer-reviewed journal articles as well as other publications."
  • "She is the kind of scholar we also should aspire to be, her scholarly contributions directly inform the lives of others and enhances their professional and personal quality of life."

Award of Excellence in Service and Outreach - Hugh Spitler

Hugh SpitlerHugh is a professor in the Department of Public Health Sciences. Nominees are faculty or staff members who have demonstrated that they share with others and facilitate collaborative efforts to solve problems. Here are some quotes from letters of support for this year’s award winner:

  • He goes above and beyond to assist and guide students and takes a personal interest in his students."
  • He represents what it means to be a servant leader."
  • He reaches out to the community both as a member of the Clemson Community Coalition and as a dedicated volunteer for several theater companies in the upstate."
  • In the latter role, he is both a performer and a set designer."

Award of Excellence for Innovation - Ralph Welsh

Ralph WelshRalph is an lecturer in the Department of Public Health Sciences. Nominees are faculty or staff members who have shared expertise through creating innovative practices, policies, or procedures which deliver outstanding benefit to teaching, research, and/or service/outreach. Here are some quotes from letters of support for this year’s award winner:

  • "He is using Facebook to promote model class discussions on examples of key public health components.  In addition, he has recorded lecture material and made it available to students via computer, tablet, or smartphone. Classroom time is then used for engaged discussion."
  • "He is an innovator in employing technology in a manner that has been a substantial benefit to student learning, cost-effective instruction and the public image of our university."
  • "He is in the forefront of using technology to enhance student learning and to have impact, not only in your university, but within the entire public health community."
  • "He has implemented the use of information technology in his health classes in very unique ways. Student created videos addressing the question of “What is Public Health?” appear on a YouTube Channel and are being assigned as syllabus material at other universities." 

Award of Excellence in Academic Advising - Micky Ward

Micky WardMicky is an academic advisor in the HEHD Academic Advising Center. The nominees for this award are faculty and staff members who have demonstrated that they advise and counsel students in obtaining their personal and academic goals.
