Here's what happens when you quit smoking

  • 20 minutes: Blood pressure and pulse rate decrease
  • 8 hours: Carbon monoxide and oxygen levels in the blood return to normal
  • 1 day: Risk of sudden heart attack decerases
  • 2 days: Senses of smell and taste both improve
  • 2 weeks: Circulation improves, lung function increases
  • 1 month: Coughing, sinus congestion, fatigue and shortness of breath decrease
  • 1 year: Your risk for coronary heart disease is half that of someone who smokes
  • 5 years: Your lung cancer risk decreases almost 50% compared to pack-a-day smokers

Everyone knows why they should quit. We're here to help you figure out how! Contact the Sullivan Center to set up an appointment with a provider who will help you choose the best plan for you to quit using tobacco. We offer a variety of options, from medical to psychological, to  help you quit today! Most major insurance companies will cover the cost of nicotine replacement therapy, too. If you're ready to quit, we're ready to help! These services are available to Clemson employees, faculty and staff and covered dependents. 

Employees, faculty and staff: The health plans offered by EIP-the State Health Plan, BlueChoice HealthPlan, and CIGNA HMO-are all self insured. All premiums, and employers' contributions, are placed in a fund and used to pay claims and administrative costs. Illnesses caused, and contributed to, by tobacco use cost this fund about $75 million per year. Reducing tobacco use will help cut this expense. Effective January 1, 2010, EIP started charging subscribers who use tobacco, or cover family members who do, an extra $25 per month in health insurance premiums. Prevention Partners offer tobacco-cessation programs specifically designed for subscribers of the State Health Plan, BlueChoice Health Plan and CIGNA HMO.

  • For subscribers of the State Health Plan or BlueChoice Health Plan, The Quit for Life Program is a FREE program designed to help you get ready to quit, take action to quit, and never smoke again! Sponsored by the American Cancer Society and Alere Wellbeing, a professionally trained Quit Coach will help you quit smoking. For more information about this program, click here. Along with your own personal Quit Coach, you will also have access to an online Web Coach, FREE quitting aids, and a quit guide. You can enroll online or call 1-866-QUIT4LIFE (1-866-784-8454). There is no cost to eligible enrollees.
  • For those enrolled in the CU4Health program, we offer an evidence based, online intervention to help you quit! Ask your health educator for access during your annual CU4Health appointment.

Students: Click here to contact Redfern Health Center about quitting tobacco today, or call 864-656-0141. Their Health Promotion office can help you with the CUQUIT program. They offer free tobacco cessation counseling for those who wish to quit.

The Sullivan Center also recommends the free online tool--Become an Ex-Smoker. To order a free hard copy of the quit manual, call 1-800-QUIT-NOW. The free manual covers ways to deal with withdrawal symptoms, information on how to identify and deal with smoking triggers, and other tools to help fight urges to smoke.

South Carolina DHEC sponsors the free Quit for Keeps program, helping South Carolinians quit forever. The SC Tobacco Quitline is open 8AM-3AM, for residents of South Carolina age 13 and older. Apps To Help You Quit Smoking

For iPhone:

Since iQuit - For those who want to quit gradually, this is the perfect app. It offers you a timer, and tells you when you can go smoke, gradually increasing the time between smokes to help you quit.

Livestrong MyQuit Coach - The livestrong MyQuit Coach App ($3.99 at the app store, or download the LITE version for free) creates a personalized plan to help you quit smoking. Physician approved, this app reminds you why you want to quit smoking, and sends you alerts throughout the day to remind you not to smoke. It also is compatible with Twitter and Facebook so you can let your friends know how you're doing!

For Android:

QuitNow! - QuitNow! is a community of over two million wonderful people who have managed to quit smoking thanks to their will, and by receiving and giving help and encouraging messages using our chat.

Quit Smoking - Quit is a widget application designed to gradually wean you from dependency on cigarettes. Each individual's step-down program is calculated based on statistical data from other users, and it's continuously adjusted to your specific smoking pattern.

Support Groups to Help You Quit

QuitWell Tobacco Cessation
GHS offers a tobacco cessation support group that meets every Tuesday evening at 6:00 p.m. in the Community Room at the Patewood Memorial Hospital main entrance. This free support group includes education and discussion and is open to everyone
