Frequently Asked Questions

Below are frequently asked questions for faculty, staff, students, and IT system administrators.

Faculty

Q: How will the different phases of this project affect me as a faculty member?
A:

Phase 1: An identity record will be created for you with a unique XID value; however, you will not need to know or use your XID value until you begin using your new TigerOne card in December 2012.

Phase 2: You will not be affected by this phase.

Phase 3: You will begin using your new TigerOne card but you will want to hold on to your old card for a little while until you know that your new card will grant you access to all of the buildings that you frequently use.  CUID will still be used for course rolls and with drop/add assistance through second summer session 2013.   We plan to provide an online tool for those needing to lookup a CUID for a given XID.

Q: How will the different phases of this project affect me as a staff member?

If you work in the role of functional lead or administrator for a system needing CUID through second summer session 2013, we plan to provide an online tool for those needing to lookup a CUID for a given XID.

IT System Administrators    (return to top)

Q:Do I need to make any changes to the software application that I support at work for phase 1?
A: Only the individuals assigned to with the project manager on this first phase needed to make software changes. This phase is now complete.

Q: My system receives an interface file or query today containing CUID and/or Emplid. Will I automatically start receiving the Xid value in my interface at some point?
A: No, there are no plans to automatically include the Xid value in any interface files or queries.   If you need to convert your CUID/EmplID values to the corresponding XID, you will need to gain access to a data warehouse conversion table that has been setup.   This access will be granted when you can show that you have a formal, signed Memo of Understanding (MOU) for your current interface file.

Q: What is a Memo of Understanding (MOU)? I have never had to sign an MOU before so why am I having to do so now?
A: An MOU is a signed agreement between a data steward, a data provider, and a data consumer. For the data steward it provides information on who is using their data and why, for the data provider it is an approval to release the data to the data consumer, and for the data consumer it is an agreement on how the data will be used.  University business processes have changed such that data is no longer interfaced between systems and/or departments without a formal, signed MOU.   Please send an email to idm-upgrade@lists.clemson.edu if you have questions on submitting an MOU.

Q: Do I need to make any changes to the software application that I support at work for phase 2?
A: The only individuals who need to enhance their software application are those in CCIT who support the data feeds to CCIT's "AutoIDs" mainframe process from SIS and CUBS HR. Also RACF tools that allow CCIT staff to create individual usernames will be migrated to Vault-based web tools. Individuals supporting applications outside of CCIT should not be affected.

Q: Do I need to make any changes to the software application that I support at work for phase 3? How will I test any changes that I need to make?
A: The student CUID number is generated today by the mainframe SIS system and used in a number of system interfaces. Banner will not generate the CUID number. So if records in your system use CUID as a key value or you use a TigerOne card reader or kiosk with your system, please send an email to idm-upgrade@lists.clemson.edu so that the project manager can contact you for a follow-up discussion to better understand any enhancements you will need to make to your system. This will also allow the project manager to talk more with you about testing your changes.

Q: We support a card reader for building access and/or as a way to collect user information at a registration desk, etc. Do I need to do anything extra for this phase?
A: Yes, if you support a card reader you need to contact the TigerOne office to see if you need to purchase a new card reader, upgrade your current card reader, etc.   You will also need to enhance your application to use the XID rather than the CUID and EmplID.   Please send email if you have questions to idm-upgrade@lists.clemson.edu.

Q: Will I need my old card for any reason after the rollout of phase 3?
A: TigerOne supports card access for the majority of campus buildings. However, there are some areas that support their own card readers so it would be good to keep both cards with you until you know that your new card grants you access to the buildings which you frequently use.

Q: Our department has a system that uses CUID but it was written a while back and no one supports it today. Will CCIT help us convert our system to CUID?
A: Unfortunately CCIT does not have staff resources to provide support of this type to departments across campus. Your area's technical support person (TSP) should be able to assist you. If you do not know who your TSP is, you can contact the CCIT Help Desk at 864-656-3494 or ithelp@clemson.edu for assistance.

Q: Do I need to make any changes to the software application that I support at work for phase 4? How will I test any changes that I need to make?
A: There are several components to phase 4, so here are some questions to ask yourself.  First does my application behave differently based on the authenticated user's role?  For example, if Suzanne is a student employee and when she logs in with her student username your application's user interface looks and behaves in a certain way but if she logs in with her employee username it behaves differently.   Second does my application reference any particular eDirectory containers such as employee, student, etc?   Lastly does your application capture username and/or emailaddress and store it in a local database?    If you can answer "Yes" to any of these three questions , please send an email to idm-upgrade@lists.clemson.edu so that the project manager can contact you for a follow-up discussion to better understand any enhancements you will need to make to your system. This will also allow the project manager to talk more with you about testing your changes.

Q: Do I need to make any changes to the software application that I support at work for phase 5? How will I test any changes that I need to make?
A: If you receive mainframe files today from SIS or CUBS HR, please send an email to idm-upgrade@lists.clemson.edu so that the project manager can contact you for a follow-up discussion to better understand any enhancements you will need to make to your system. This will also allow the project manager to talk more with you about testing your changes.

Q: Will Visitor IDs work the same after phase 3 and 4 as they do today?
A: Visitor IDs will work the same way they do today after phase 3 goes live.  However, the process will change in phase 4 - more details about the phase 4 changes will be shared by spring 2013.

Q: My system uses Active Directory today.  Will the identity management project impact Active Directory in such a way that I will have to make enhancements?
A: Active Directory should not be impacted by the identity management project.

Q: My system uses LDAP today.  Will the identity management project impact LDAP in such a way that I will have to make enhancements?
A: The ClemsonU tree today has four containers - employee, student, MISC, and other.  The new CUID tree will have one container.   If your LDAP settings are configured to point to the ClemsonU tree today and you assume that roles are based on container membership, then you will need to make enhancements for phase 4 to point to the CUID tree and use attributes to determines roles.

Q: My system uses Campus Directory (or Phonebook) web services today.   Will the identity management project impact these in such a way that I will have to make enhancements?
A: Yes, we want to improve these services so you will be impacted.   Please send an email to idm-upgrade@lists.clemson.edu so that the project manager can contact you for a follow-up discussion to better understand how you use these web services today.

If you have additional questions about the project, please email idm-upgrade@lists.clemson.edu.
