FTP is a simple and secure way to transfer files between your computer and your network resources such as your userspace. FTP is available on all machines automatically and can be used from a browser, a command window and from applications that manage file movement (such as Dreamweaver and Mozilla). If you need an interface other than these, you can use a utility such as WS-FTP for Windows or Fetch for MAC OS. For more information about downloading, installing and using these utilities, please see our FTP Userspace solution guide.

The browser method of using FTP is perhaps the quickest way to start using FTP and you can assist your students in a short period of time with moving files from their computers to their userspace. To start, have the student open an Internet Explorer browser session.

In the address line type ftp://ftp.netware.clemson.edu and press GO or the Enter key.

FTP Login screen

The FTP server will prompt the student for their userid and password. Please note that the userid must be fully qualified with the context (.userid.firstletter.students.clemsonu). For example, the student userid kdobren would be fully qualified as

.kdobren.k.students.clemsonu

After entering the fully qualified ID and password, the student should click the Logon button and shortly, will see the files and folders in their userspace. By clicking the Folders button on the toolbar in the browser, the user can see the directory paths for their userspace and folders under the Internet Explorer section.

Now the student can navigate using the folders menu on the left to the local files and folders that need to be uploaded. Once those files are visible in the frame on the right, the user can click and drag those files and folders to the directory within the ftp.netware.clemson.edu directories in the Folders panel on the left.

Don't forget that if you want the student files to be available to you, they must be in the PUBLIC.WWW directory on the student's userspace.Folder directory path for accessing userspace
