AppleMail10.6 Setup

This document is for Apple Mail Client Version 4.2 in OSX10.6 & 5.2 in OSX10.7 connecting to Exchange.

Create your Exchange mailbox, and enable Forwarding.

Important information you should know.

If you are a first time Exchange user, your initial checking of the "Use Exchange Server" checkbox will create your Exchange account, and checking the "Deliver email to my Exchange mailbox" adds your name to the Global Address List (GAL).
Keep in mind this process is not instantaneous. Account creation will take about 10 minutes, and your name will be published to the GAL on the next scheduled update (every 4 hours).

Step 1:Using your preferred web browser, open the following URL http://www.clemson.edu/email_forwarding/

Step 2:Login with your Clemson credentials when prompted.

Recomended setting for Exchange users Step 3: Check the top two boxes in the exchange section, "Use Exchange Server" and "Deliver e-mail to my Exchange Mailbox" only.

Step1: Open Apple Mail from your Dock (or applications folder)

Step2: Input your personal information into the dialog.

Email address: username@clemson.edu

Password: your Clemson password.

Step3: If asked about a Clemson.edu certificate, select Connect

Step 4 ImgStep4: That's it! You can also select Address Book Contacts, and iCal Calendars (recommended).

Then Click Create.

Apple Mail for existing users

This section is for users with existing e-mail accounts (i.e., Hotmail, Yahoo, or Google) they wish to preserve and are wanting to add an Exchange account, or an additional Exchange account.

Apple Mail Settings Review

This section is provided in the event you need to review your Exchange mailbox settings for troubleshooting purposes. Due to how Apple mail relies on Autodiscover for setup, these settings should not be considered a manual setup option when the client is experiencing connectivity issues. If you are experiencing issues with a setup, see the common setup errors section at the bottom of this document.

  • Description should be Clemson Exchange or similar descriptive name.
  • Internal server: xmail.clemson.edu
  • External server: xmail.clemson.edu
  • User Name: Your Clemson Username.
  • Password: Your Clemson Password.
  • Outgoing Mail server: Should be your Exchange account (the name in the description field.

Internal Server Path: EWS/Exchange.asmx

Basic Troubleshooting and Common Setup Errors

APL ERR 1Login Error: This error can be caused by a few things:

One, the most common reason is due to forwarding not being enabled properly. Exchange forwarding can be enabled via the Forwarding Options Control Panel.

Two, the username or Name is not spelled correctly, or does not match what is in the Global address list.

Three, You are attempting to set up a newly provisioned account, and has not propagated to the GAL yet, please try again in 10 minutes.

APL ERR 2Not Responding error: This is a connectivity type error. It could be due to a typo in the email address, DNS lookup issue or lack of proper connectivity with your computer. (netreg or general connectivity problems.)

Other than a typo, your consultant/Tech should help diagnose this issue.

Users not connected to the Campus network can also use the VPN service to connect to the Campus network. This should only be needed if they are experiencing issues. More info on VPN services can be found here.
