Telephone Features Instructions

(Please note that these instructions are also located in the front section of the printed Clemson University Directory under "General Information.")

The following contains a comprehensive review of Digital ESSX Service features. Features included on residence hall telephones are noted with an asterisk (*). Features on administrative telephones have been selected based on individual user needs; your telephone may not have all of the features indicated. For successful feature completion, please remember these two steps:

  1. Depress Tap (Switch hook on dorm phones)
  2. Dial code or number

Switch hook Operation

The Switch hook is the button(s) where the telephone's handset rests when not in use and is used to activate various features. (Administrative telephone users should always use the Tap button labeled on their telephone.)

  1. Depress the Switch hook down firmly as far as it will go and release immediately!
  2. Listen for the special dial tone (three short bursts of tone and then a steady dial tone). You have depressed the Switch hook properly.
  3. Proceed with dialing.

REMEMBER: Holding the Switch hook down longer than one second will disconnect your call. Release immediately!


Call Forwarding

Allows you to forward your calls to a friend's on-campus phone while you are out.
(Administrative calls may be forwarded to on-campus and local numbers.) Activate:

  1. Lift handset
  2. Dial 114
  3. Dial the extension number to which your calls are to be forwarded.
  4. Hang up

Verify:

  • Dial your own number

When party answers, inform them you are forwarding your calls to their number.

Cancel Call Forwarding:

  1. Lift handset
  2. Dial 115
  3. Hang up

Call Hold

Allows you to place your present call on hold. Depress Switch hook or tap button.

  1. Listen for special tone
  2. Dial 111
  3. Lay handset down

To return to held call:

  1. Hang up
  2. Telephone will ring
  3. Answer and resume conversation

Call Park

Allows you to put a call in a special hold state and retrieve it from your station or another station.

  1. Depress Switch hook or tap button
  2. Listen for special dial tone
  3. Dial 112
  4. Listen for confirmation tone
  5. Hang up

To retrieve a parked call from any station:

  1. Lift handset
  2. Listen for dial tone
  3. Dial 113
  4. Listen for confirmation tone, followed by dial tone
  5. Dial 7-digit number the call was parked on
  6. Begin conversation

Call Pickup

Allows you to answer a ringing call on another station in your pickup group. To pickup a call when your telephone is idle:

  1. Lift handset
  2. Dial 116
  3. Begin conversation

Call Transfer

Allows you to transfer any established call to another on-campus number. (Administrative calls may be transferred to on-campus and off-campus numbers.)

  1. Depress Switch hook or tap button
  2. Listen for special tone
  3. Dial a third number
  4. Announce call
  5. Begin conversation

Call Waiting

Allows you to receive a tone from an incoming off-campus call when your line is busy. Upon hearing the tone:

  1. Depress Switch hook or tap button
  2. Dial 111
  3. Your first call is now on hold and the second call is now on your phone

To alternate between the calls:

  1. Depress Switch hook or tap button
  2. Dial 111
    OR
  3. Upon hearing the tone, hang up. (This disconnects your first call.)
  4. Your phone will ring
  5. Answer

Cancel Call Waiting*

Allows you to override the Call Waiting tone for the duration of a specific call.

  1. Depress *
  2. Dial 70
  3. Dial the number you wish to call

Directed Call Pickup

Allows you to selectively answer a ringing call from another telephone by dialing an access code and the number of the ringing station.

  1. Lift the handset
  2. Listen for dial tone
  3. Dial 119
  4. Dial the number of the ringing station
  5. Identify yourself

Last Number Redial


Depress the # button twice to redial the last number dialed. (If the number dialed was a long distance number, you must re-enter your authorization code.)


Ring Again

Allows you to be called back automatically when a busy on-campus station becomes idle.

  1. Upon hearing the busy signal, depress the Switch hook or tap button
  2. Dial 117
  3. Hang up

When the busy extension becomes free, your phone will ring. Answer and hear ringing.

Cancel:

  1. Lift handset
  2. Dial 117
  3. Hang up

Speed Calling

Allows you to call a list of up to ten numbers by dialing a one-digit abbreviated code associated with the number. To call a number on the list:

  1. Lift handset
  2. Listen for dial tone
  3. Depress the * symbol
  4. Dial the one-digit speed calling code
  5. Depress the # symbol
  6. Wait for answer

To change or program speed calling list:

  1. Lift handset
  2. Listen for dial tone
  3. Dial 126
  4. Listen for special dial tone
  5. Dial the one-digit speed calling code
  6. Dial number
  7. Depress the # symbol
  8. Listen for confirmation tone, followed by dial tone

To delete a number from the list:

  1. Lift handset
  2. Listen for dial tone
  3. Dial 126
  4. Listen for special dial tone
  5. Dial the one-digit speed calling code associated with the number to be deleted
  6. Depress the # symbol

Three-way Conference/Consultation Hold:

Allows you to add a third party to an existing call. It provides both consultation and add-on capabilities.

To add a third party:

  1. Depress Switch hook or tap button
  2. Listen for special dial tone
  3. Dial third number
  4. When party answers, depress the Switch hook or tap button
  5. Resume conversation

To consult with third party:

  1. Depress Switch hook or tap button
  2. Listen for special dial tone
  3. Dial a third number
  4. When party answers, consult privately

To return to held party:

  1. Depress Switch hook or tap button
  2. Resume conversation

Conference Calls


The University's telephone system has three options for placing conference calls:

  1. Three-Way Conference - Allows you to add a third party to an existing call.
  2. Station-Controlled Conference - Allows you to establish a conference call from a single-line telephone consisting of three or more (up to 30) parties.
  3. Meet-Me Conference - Allows you to arrange a conference call consisting of up to 30 conferees. Each member of the call must dial a 7-digit number at a specified time.

To Establish a conference call, follow these procedures:

Three-way Conference

  1. Dial first number
  2. Depress Switch hook or tap button
  3. Listen for special tone
  4. Dial second number
  5. When party answers, depress Switch hook or tap button
  6. Resume conversation

Station-Controlled Conference

To connect first conferee:

  1. Dial 118
  2. Listen for special dial tone
  3. Dial number of first conferee
  4. When conferee answers, depress Switch hook or tap button
  5. Listen for special dial tone
  6. Dial 118
  7. Conference call is established

To connect additional conferees:

  1. Depress Switch hook or tap button
  2. Listen for special dial tone
  3. Dial number of next conferee
  4. Depress Switch hook or tap button
  5. Listen for special dial tone
  6. Dial 118
  7. Third party is now added to conference call
  8. A conference tone is heard by all conferees as each new conferee is added.

To release a station upon receiving a busy tone or no answer:

  1. Dial 124
  2. Listen for special tone
  3. Dial 118
