More Information about VPN Software

Recently there have been reports of disconnects while using Cisco's VPN software to connect to campus, especially while using MatLab. This issue is caused by a conflict with the Windows XP Service Pack 2 Firewall being enabled.

To fix this issue, three exceptions need to be added to the Windows Firewall settings. The three exceptions are as follows:

  • port 10000 UDP
  • port 1023 TCP
  • port 500 UDP

To add these exceptions, please follow these directions:

  1. Go to the “Start” button
  2. Go to the “Control Panel”
  3. Select “Windows Firewall” option
  4. Go to the “Exceptions” tab
  5. Click the “Add Port” Button
  6. For the port number, insert “10000” (ten thousand)
  7. Select the radio button next to “UDP”
  8. Click the “Change scope” button
  9. Select the “Custom List” option
  10. Input “130.127.12.21” under the “Custom List” option.
  11. Click OK
  12. Click OK
  13. Repeat steps 5-13 for the following port numbers: “1023 – TCP” and “500 – UDP” with the same Scope Option IP address listed in number 11.
