Using McAfee VirusScan 8.0i  

McAfee VirusScan 8.0i is the recommended virus scanning software for Clemson University. It is licensed for all University-owned computers, all currently enrolled students' computers, and any computer connected to the Clemson University network.


Getting McAfee VirusScan 8.0i

There are three ways to acquire McAfee software for the campus license. You can download it from http://download.clemson.edu. You will need your Clemson userid and password to download this software. If you are on campus logged in to Novell, you can install it by going to S:\software\install\win\virus. Alternatively, you can purchase an Application CD from the Help Desk in Martin Hall for $2 (Tiger Stripe only). This CD contains Clemson University software on it, including McAfee VirusScan. Or if you are a student with a laptop, you can bring your computer to the CCIT Support Center where Laptop Support can install McAfee VirusScan for you.


Uninstalling AntiVirus Software

If you have anti-virus software already on your computer, you must uninstall it first. Below are instructions on how to uninstall McAfee 8.0 Home.

1. You first need to stop McAfee if is currently running. In the bottom right-hand corner of the computer screen, near the click, look for the red McAfee "M" like the one pictured to the right. If you see this McAfee icon, right-click on it. From the menu that appears, click Exit. Click Yes to confirm you want to exit. McAfee System Tray Icon
2. Go to Start and click Control Panel. When the Control Panel opens, double-click on Add/Remove Programs. Selecting Control Panel from the Start Menu
3. Scroll down to McAfee VirusScan and highlight it. Then click the Change/Remove button. Click Yes to confirm you want to uninstall McAfee VirusScan. Selecting the program from Add/Remove Programs
4. Once McAfee VirusScan is uninstalled, click the Close button. Do not restart the computer yet! Uninstalling McAfee
5. Highlight McAfee Security Center and then click the Change/Remove button. Click Yes to confirm you want to uninstall McAfee Security Center. Click Yes to confirm that you want to uninstall. Uninstalling McAfee Security Center
6. Once McAfee Security Center is uninstalled, you will need to restart the computer before installing the new version of McAfee VirusScan. Click Restart. Select Restart



Installing McAfee VirusScan 8.0i

1. Double-click on the McAfee VirusScan install program. When asked to verify the installation, click Yes. McAfee Dialog Box
2. On the first window, click Next to begin the installation process. Installation Window, Click Next
3. On the license agreement, set the License Expiry type to Perpetual. Set the bottom button to I Accept. Click OK to continue installing McAfee VirusScan. Installation Window, select Perpetual
4. Set the Setup Type to Typical and click Next. Select Setup Type Dialog Box
5. Installation is now ready to begin. To start, click Install. If there any programs running that may interfere with the installation, you will be asked to close them. Once they are closed, click Retry to continue with the installation. Ready to Install Dialog Box
6. Once the installation is complete, McAfee VirusScan will ask to run an update and scan. Update Now should be checked. It is recommended that you leave Run On-Demand Scan checked also, especially if you have not been running any anti-virus software recently. You may be asked to restart the computer. Updating Virus Definitions


  1. To manually update your virus definitions, look for the McAfee VirusScan in the bottom right-hand corner of the computer screen. It should look like the icon to the right. Right-click on it and select Update Now. McAfee will download the latest virus definitions. Click Close when finished.
