Changes to Email System May Affect Receipt of Messages

CCIT has implemented enhanced functionality to the Clemson email routing and forwarding environment. With this change, additional security measures also have been implemented regarding the rules for accepting and sending email.

Why Did We Make These Changes?

Other major sites on the Internet were rejecting our email because we did not have in place a feature called Reverse DNS (Doman Name System) Lookup. This lookup essentially verifies that the domain name (e.g. @dnr.sc.gov) is valid by comparing the IP address that the message was sent from with the IP address registered for the domain name. This configuration has become standard protocol in email processing. We now have this feature in place, so now we are blocking others who do not have this Reverse DNS Lookup.

What Action is Needed?

This enhanced functionality is operating automatically behind the scenes so no configuration change on your PC is required. If you receive calls from agencies or companies indicating that their email is being rejected by Clemson with an error message of “Access denied…”, please review the information posted here.

As always, if you have any questions or need assistance, please contact the CCIT Customer Support Center by calling (864) 656-3494 or sending email to ITHELP@clemson.edu.

Google Apps for Education Accounts Automatically Provided for All New Students

Google Apps for Education (GAE) is provided as an option to all Clemson students as part of the partnership with Clemson University Student Government, CCIT and Google. The program was introduced last year and offers full email functionality and large data storage (6 GB); plus Google Apps provides Google Calendar and Google Docs. The offering allows you to use Google's email with your Clemson email address and you may continue using this address after graduation.

Google Apps for Education is the preferred email system for students. On Thursday, May 8, all incoming student accounts will automatically have a g.clemson.edu email account.

For incoming students only:
Your Clemson email (userid@clemson.edu) will be forwarded to your Google Apps for Education account unless you have already selected forwarding to another email address. You may check your email forwarding at http://www.clemson.edu/email_forwarding.

Students already using the Google Apps for Education email will not see any disruption in service. Existing students will need to still use the current process to request creation of a Google Apps for Education account and then make a choice regarding their email forwarding options.

New students who wish to use webmail or another email service other than Google Apps for Education will need to make that change at http://www.clemson.edu/email_forwarding.

Employees may use Google Apps for Education as an optional email solution. However, Outlook/Exchange is the preferred email and calendaring system for employees.

For more information, see our online FAQ’s at http://www.clemson.edu/ccit/support_services/it_support/email/google/gfaq.html.

New Web Mail Portal

We've made a new "front door" for all of the web-based mail clients supported by Clemson. Here you will find the links for

  • Xmail - the web interface for employees to use to access their Outlook accounts stored on the university's Exchange server,
  • Google Apps for Education - available to students and employees (see below for more information), and
  • Webmail - available to all students and employees to check their email on mail.clemson.edu.

Microsoft Exchange Services

Clemson University runs Exchange 2003 servers for use by faculty and staff to provide a seamless interface for email, calendaring and contacts.

Check the Exchange home page for more information and updates.

Spam Filtering

Clemson University uses Proofpoint to filter spam and other junk mail messages. Proofpoint filters out 99% of the junk mail received by Clemson. Students and employees will receive daily and weekly email digests of any questionable email put into quarantine. They can release the messages or mark the sender as safe or not. If not released within 14 days, the quarantined messages will be deleted. More information about Proofpoint is available.

Accessing Your Email

Your Clemson email is accessible from offices, computer labs, dorm rooms and from off campus. The recommended and supported email software is Eudora, for which the university has a site license. Email can also be accessed via Clemson's web mail from any web browser.

Accessing email from an office:
The first point of contact for setting up email on an office computer should be your departmental Technology Support Provider (TSP). They will assist you with installing and setting up your email software. A list of TSPs and information about the TSP program is available.

Accessing email from a computer lab or dorm room:
Web mail is the recommended way to access your email from the public access labs. The web mail portal contains links to the university supported web mail clients.

Off-Campus Access:
The easiest way to access your Clemson email is by using web mail. The web mail portal contains links to the university supported web mail clients.

Information for configuring your email can be found in the documentation library.
