Microsoft® Windows® Operating System
What is Windows®?
Windows® is the standard operating system that was created by Microsoft in the 1980's. This is the operating system that comes pre-installed on most most pc's and laptops today. Windows® is a graphical user interface that makes navigating the files and applications on your computer easy. First sold as an add-on product to the MS-Dos product, it has evolved and become more user friendly with each release: Windows® 3.1, Windows® 95, Windows® 98, Windows® ME, Windows® 2000, Windows® XP, and now Windows Vista®.
Is there a cost associated with Windows®XP or Windows Vista®?
Clemson Faculty and Students can purchase a copy of Windows® XP Professional, Windows Vista® Business or Windows Vista® Ultimate at the Apple Store. Once a student graduates they can no longer eligible to purchase these CD's. This software can be installed on the students computers while they are attending Clemson and can be re-installed once they graduate as long as they have purchased the CD's. If a student transfers or drops-out, they should follow proper procedures and guidelines and remove any Windows® and/or Microsoft Office products from their computer. More information regarding this can be found on the Software After Graduation website and the CCIT Software Sales website.
Can I download Windows®?
No. However, you can download Microsoft updates by going to http://www.microsoft.com/download. Note that most computers are set up to automatically download updates.
