Getting Started

Teaching at a Distance Checklist

1. Self Assessment - Are you ready to teach online?

This tool is designed to help us determine which training courses may be beneficial to you. The assessment is divided into 6 sections: Basic Computer Skills, Online Communication, Web Development, Online Learning Experience, Blackboard Skills, Teaching Skills, and Copyright Laws. It will provide you with an overall idea of what is involved in creating and teaching an online course, and allow us to make recommendations for training courses you might find helpful. The individualized assessment ensures that you are less likely to attend a training course with content you have already mastered.

2. Review Hardware and Software Requirements

We have created a list of Hardware and Software Requirements based on faculty experiences with developing and delivering online courses.

3. How can we help you?

This survey provides our instructional designers and course developers with information used to assist you with course development. There are 4 parts to the needs analysis: instructor information, course information, course materials and training. Once your Needs Analysis has been submitted, you will be contacted by one of our instructional designers who will work with you to develop a plan of action.

4. Training and Development

Review our list of possible training options. View our current schedule of workshops. If you do not see what you are looking for on the current schedule, our instructional designer can work with you to create a customized training experience to address your needs. The course development process will include:

  • Creation of development course
  • Course materials development
  • Selection of delivery tools and methods

5. Course Review and Delivery

An important part of the development process is the final review to ensure that the course meets quality standards. The instructional designer will assist you with a self evaluation of your course using the Quality Matters rubric as a checklist.
