MessageGrid

MessageGrid is web-based software being developed by Dr. Roy Pargas of the School of Computing and several of his students. MessageGrid is web based tool that enables the instructor to develop exercises promoting interactivity in online, laptop, or Tablet PC-enhanced courses. As students submit their work, a mosaic of responses is created. Students can see the collective answers gradually forming and, at the end, the entire class has a global view of all answers submitted. MessageGrid may also be used for out-of-class assignments and team projects. The instructor enjoys great flexibility in designing creative activities in and out of class. Unlike a discussion board, MessageGrid can display all the student responses at the same time in a grid, table, or chart, allowing comparisons among and mergers of entries. The instructor also has the option to keep student submissions anonymous or private. The instructor has the ability to add to critique, correct, and elaborate upon student discussions, making the saved product suitable for students to study with later.

Part 1 - Introduction to MessageGrid

Duration: (1 hour)
MessageGrid is web-based software being developed by Dr. Roy Pargas of the School of Computing and several of his students. It enables the instructor to develop exercises promoting interactivity in online, laptop, or Tablet PC-enhanced courses. This one-hour, hands-on session will introduce the user to MessageGrid's versatile functions, illustrated with examples of how to use the tool in class. In this workshop you will:

  • Setup a MessageGrid account
  • Learn how to access MessageGrid
  • Create a discussion grid
  • Post a response to a discussion grid

Part 2 - MessageGrid Online Discussion Evaluation (ODE)

Duration (1 hour)
One of the latest functions added to MessageGrid is ODE (Online Discussion Evaluation). ODE enables an instructor to have his or her students participate in an asynchronous online discussion. Students may start discussion threads on the assigned topic, reply to other students comments, and include images and links to enhance their submissions. They can also view and participate in the discussion in logical (rather than chronological) order. Using the evaluation tool, instructors can more easily evaluate a discussion, automatically counting submissions, determining whether submissions were on time or late, gathering a single student's submissions in one place, collecting the student's references in one place. This allows instructors to focus on the quality of a student's submission. In this workshop you will:

  • Create a Rubric to grade MessageGrid discussions
  • Grade Student Discussions with the ODE Rubric
