Microsoft License
Clemson University's agreement with Microsoft allows all Clemson students and staff to use the current version of Microsoft Windows and Office. If a student graduates, it is legal for him to take it with him. If a student transfers or drops out, he should remove Windows and/or Office from his computer and purchase his own copy.
It is also legal, as long as a person is a student at Clemson, for him to purchase a Windows or Office CD. They are available at the Clemson Apple Store (in the Student Union) for a small fee. Once a student graduates, he can no longer purchase this media. It is a good idea to purchase the media shortly before graduation.
Additionally, a student can access Office via the Novell R: drive or the software installer (available from Laptop Support). He does need a valid Clemson user ID and password to access these - so this also must be done before graduation.
Software On Recommended Laptops After Graduation
The recommended laptops are generally purchased from the vendor with a base operating system license. To keep the cost down, we ask that the vendor charge the students for the least costly operating system. Then since the users are Clemson students, we supply an image with the newest Microsoft software included.
As long as the user is a Clemson student, it is legal for him to use that software. If he graduates, it is legal for him to take it with him.
But if he graduates and then his software 'breaks' or his hard drive has to be replaced, then there is a problem. In that case, one alternative is to call the recommended vendor (Dell, Apple, Lenovo, etc.) for restore CDs. Note that the restore CDs will include the older less expensive operating system that was originally included in the price of the computer - NOT the newest Clemson licensed operating system. Note that there is usually a charge for the restore CDs - and they do not include Office or any of the other Clemson licensed software.
