Research Programs

The faculty of the Civil Engineering Department conduct research in areas that support the University's Academic Emphasis Areas in Sustainable Environment, Automtotive and Transportation Technology, and Advanced Materials.

Applied Fluid Mechanics

Applied Fluid Mechanics
Faculty conduct research in environmental fluid mechanics, sediment transport and scour, turbulent jets, contaminated sediments, coastal engineering and others. Research facilities include the off-campus Clemson Hydraulics Laboratory (CHL) and the Wind Load Test Facility (WLTF).

Construction Engineering and Management

Construction Engineering and Management
There is an increasing need for construction managers who have the ability to respond to the changing technical, organizational, and managerial environments within the industry. Today's construction organizations require managers who are well versed in all phases of projects and have good communication skills.

Construction Materials

Construction Materials
The much needed reconstruction and replacement of an aging infrastructure places increased emphasis on developing new and/or improved materials for pavements, bridges, buildings and other structures. The faculty are involved in cutting edge research in asphalt and concrete materials.

Geotechnical Engineering

Geotechnical Engineering
The primary emphasis of geotechnical engineering research is on the investigation of soil liquefaction, earthquake ground response, braced excavation systems, pile foundations, and soil dynamics. Geotechnical engineering at Clemson involves computational, analytical as well as experimental and field studies.

Structural Engineering

Structural Engineering
This field deals predominantly with structural systems in the built environment. It has become increasingly specialized in recent years and advanced study is nearly always required for more interesting and challenging employment opportunities and advancement in the workplace.

Transportation Engineering

Transportation Systems
Mobility systems are essential for the efficient movement of people and goods. Air, land and marine transportation systems play a vital role in insuring a strong economy and an a good quality of life. The challenges of creating and managing mobility systems are addressed in an interdisciplinary manner.
